I'm working on resurrecting an 83 Aspencade and would like some advice on an issue with water in the oil. I've tried replacing the water pump using an OEM pump and K+L gasket kit purchased through Amazon. Unfortunately, this has not solved the issue. One thing I am seeing is that I'm losing water even when the bike is unused. I'd estimate that the water level dropped by at least a cup and a half over a one week period. I've pulled the water pump back out and there doesn't appear to be anything obvious although I'm far from an expert. Before I start pulling the head off I thought I'd just see if this forum could provide any insights.

Remove the spark plugs, crank the engine over and see if any coolant sprays out. If it does, obvious headgasket or cracked head, if not it's probably the aftermarket gaskets for the front cover. This is a list of gaskets and orings,

Also does it steam out the exhaust more than it should?. Does it steam after it is up to temperature or build radiator pressure too fast?

are you the first to replace the water pump, or someone else? I ask, because last time I replaced my water pump in a GL1000, I got too over zealous cleaning out the bore the pump bolts into..
(removed too much "meat" trying to make it all clean in there.. it leaked quite a bit (out the weep hole, if I recall, don't know if it could leak into the oil from there). I ultimately had to buy another front cover, & put the same pump into it without boring & cleaning the recess it fits into ..all was good then..
