Besides all the possible carb problems there is another thing to check. Last year wehn i got my 83 out after the winter it did the same thing you are talking about. Now mind you I had completely gone through the carbs before putting it up and ran great, carbs were drained and clean before storing. Put my battery in and gas and she fired right up but backfired on one side like a cannon, never had that happen before. Well my battery was a few years old and kinda weak, checked the voltage after starting and it was way low and not coming back up, less than 10 volts and stator doesn't start raally charging till higher rpms on these. New battery, no backfire! These ignition systems don't work well below about 11 volts, a few misfires to load the muffler then fire and well pretty noisy and flame too possibly. before you tear into carbs and such check your battery voltage after start. Or you can hook up a jumper battery and see if that helps.
