83 GL1100 Ticking sound on right side

Hello,
My 83 GL1000 has always had a slight ticking sound on the right side when idling as well as driving, sounds slow enough that it would only be one cylinder.
I have changed the timing belts, adjusted the valve lash, sync'd the carbs and even changed the exhaust gaskets. The ticking sound is still there.
Other info that could help diagnose this:
- Compression on the right side is in spec.
- The P.O. dropped the bike as the right side exhaust has a good dent in it and when changing the timing belt I found the rear shield had been "repaired" with a grinder.
- The right side exhaust burns a little oil when warming up the bike.
- The Frame is an 83 but the engine code indicates its an 82 engine ( not sure if this is normal )

Anyone have any ideas?

My 82 1100I has the same thing. I've done all you have, and did some twice, same thing except I haven't done exhaust gaskets (since you have, I won't).

Must be normal Goldwing noise

Quite normal... Could also be fuel pump.... Had my '83 for 17 years and still not sure what it is..

I have read (somewhere in this forum), that what sounded like a valve clicking was actually a leak in the exhaust. Not the gaskets, but an actual hole in the header (rusted through). I dont know how you would test this, but with the compression being good, and the comments about the grinder repair of the exhaust shield, I think this may be something to look into.

Well, you could pour a.couple of ounces of MMO into your plenum and rev the engine to about 3000 RPM. Watch out for the smoke lol. If you have ANY exhaust leaks, they'll show up as smoke exiting where it shouldn't. :yelling:

I actually removed the header at one point to try and fix the dent. I found a small hole, welded that shut, nothing else though.

If this is normal I'm even happier to keep riding!

If you haven't already done so, an easy way to check the fuel pump is just to put your hand on it while the engine is running. If it's the pump, you'll feel the click at the same time you hear it.
