I have read (somewhere in this forum), that what sounded like a valve clicking was actually a leak in the exhaust. Not the gaskets, but an actual hole in the header (rusted through). I dont know how you would test this, but with the compression being good, and the comments about the grinder repair of the exhaust shield, I think this may be something to look into.
