why?

(PS:the '83rpm is lower than all previous models).,. and any differenceamong '83s is just speedometer (or tach)error.. all 1983 models are geared the same and different than all previous years..

The '83 will run a long, long way at 4000 rpm's and greater. Have fun riding.

Don't worry about it, that bike's been doing that for a lot of years and it hasn't hurt it yet.

My '82 GL1100 has an '81 engine and an '82 rear and runs about 4900 at 70. I have an '83 engine going into the bike in about a week and I am looking forward to the reduced rpm to 4000 at 70 mph!

My 83 runs real smooth at 70 mph. Anywhere between 2500-4500 is very smooth on my bike.

My '80 GL1100 does 15mph for each 1000rpm so work it out.....70mph is just short of 5000
Would like to lower the revs with some sort of change in overall gearing but if its too complicated will just stick with the high revs. Helps when you want to show up some young twit:gunhead: in a sooped up bucket with 4" dia exhaust who deafens you when taking away from traffic lights.
Don't they just hate it when a 30yo bike can leave them sitting:D and do it relatively quietly:cheeky1:

Just like the others here, 38-4000 right around 70mph.

When I had to replace my rear drive, I used another 83 unit to keep the final drive ratio. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the lower RPM on the 83's because of the 83 final drive ratio?

there were all so some small changes in the trans. ratio wise. but not much.

Partly, but there are differences in secondary and the trans gear ratios also..

I wanted to reduce my revs on the highway so I picked up a 30 tooth rear sprocket.........but I can't figure out where to put it.
