83 interstate front caliper

Hi Folks, I have been working on an 83 interstate that I bought in parts ( some what) While putting new kits in the front calipers, the right side fit fine but the left side has larger cylinders? The shop that I got the parts from say's that they both take the same kit, so I have to guess that the left one has been changed from another year. How many years used that bolt pattern? The forks are correct from what I can see in pictures but even the left kit had a tubular rubber piece about an inch long that was open on one end that didn't match anything on the caliper mounting. Any ideas? Dana

The '83 has linked brakes, so the pistons are different sizes from one side to the other. The '82 has the same dual pistons, but they are the same size on both sides. Likely that's the kit they sent. There should be 8 rings, 2 different types and sizes...

You'd be surprised how many parts suppliers know nothing about what they sell....

The brake caliper kits from the GL1200 are supposed to be identical to the '83.

Some how you lost me? You say that the 83's are the same, then they are different? It is a linked system. Dana

See the edited post. The '82 looked the same, but had the same sized pistons from side to side. And they are NOT linked, like the '83.

83 interstate---you have a right caliper linked to the rear. left front is linked to the handle bar master clyinder only. there are 2 differnt sizes of piston seals needed for the front calipers.
i belive he was saying the 1200 were the same way.

And wda-83wing knows about dealers not knowing their parts. How about that fiasco with the brake lines?

The dealer thought that '82 and '83 used the same brake lines... Took a few months to straighten them out.

I believe the front and rear linked brakes use the same size pads and pistons. The single front brake caliper uses the larger kit/parts. I went the same route with my 1200... :gunhead:

I in no way meant any disrespect folks, you guys are kings. I didn't understand what he meant. I will stop by the shop that I got the parts from and see if we can get it right, wish I knew what number to hit him with for the left front. Again thanks guys, your a blessing. Highcountry

Heres another try . !983 Honda Goldwing is the first Honda to have " Integrated Brake System " This system has the foot brake pedal apply pressure to the rear wheel and the right front caliper .The hand brake lever only applies the left front caliper.The REAR caliper and LEFT front caliperuse the same seals and dust boots . The RIGHT front caliper has smaller diameter pistons ,hence a different set of part#s for its seals and dust boots. If you need the correct #s PM and I'll search my records.

Ask for the GL1200 front caliper kit. Verify that there are 2 different sized square rings...

i just looked in 2 differnt places and they dont show differnt size seal part # . better pm onawingandaprayer and get the #. very strange !

Same problem ordering parts online... 50% of the time you/I get the wrong kit for that front brake cylinder and the supplier swears that you/I have some strange bike.."must have been modified from stock..."..

Most if not all blowup diagrams (even for the 1200) only show 1 of the 2 front calipers in the exploded view.

Found this from an old exavid post:

The '83 is the first year for the linked brakes. On the 1100, 1200 and 1500s with linked brakes the front caliper linked to the rear has a smaller piston to help prevent front wheel lockup with heavy braking on the rear pedal. Mother Honda made a lot of brake changes in the four years of the 1100's production, I don't think any two years were the same.

If I remember it right I asked for a two sets of rear caliper and dust seals for an '83 Aspy and one set of front caliper and dust seals for an '82. The small front caliper uses the same size as the rear caliper and the larger seals for the '81-83 are the same.

Here are the Honda part numbers you need:

Left caliper:

2 ea. Dust seals 45109-GE2-006 @ $2.93 ea.

2 ea. Piston seals 45209-GE2-006 @ $3.63 ea.

Right caliper:

2 ea. Dust seals 45109-MA7-006 @ $2.93 ea.

2 ea. Piston seals 45209-Ma7-006 @ $3.63 ea.

Additional parts recommended:

4 ea. Boot, pin 45133-MA3-006 @ $2.50 ea.

2 ea. Boot B 45133-166-016 @ $2.98 ea.

One things for sure . He has #s for what fits . So the #s he dont have is what he needs .
