One of the Strongest bikes ever to hit the street IMO.

The only problem up-front issecond gear. If you can upshift through it, then it's worth getting unless you're willing to do some serious work to it. '83's were the most vulnerableto second gear problems. If that bike at 40K miles shifts through second fine, you can rest assured it was taken care of well during its life.

The bike should've had 4 valve adjustments, preferably 5 checks at least, with themileage indicated. If the valves have never been adjusted, and second gear shifts fine, I'd continue with the purchase.

There are other minor issues and/or improvements, but none should prevent you from making the purchase if the above are good to go.

This page will give you a good start for quick info..

Once you are the Owner of the bike, thissite will give you the strongest immediate tech support.

my dad had one its the 1st bike i learned on how to ride on and OH MY GODDDDDDDDD ive never rode a bike that was so well balanced with power, weight and acceleration

i could almost pop wheelies on that thing it was scary fast it could outrun almost anything and everything on the road.

if you dumped the clutch in 1st gear you could feed the beast enough gears to keep up by the time you think hey im in 3rd or 4th gear i should be doin 60mph ummmmmmmm no more like 90mph easily

be safe be careful thats one of the bikes that no matter how safe of a rider you are the retard cap comes on and you do crazy and stupid things on why.... because you can and the bike has the stuff to back it up.

I had an 84.....that bike would bounce your eyeballs off the back of your skull! I don't know what top end was, I'm not all that concerned with "how fast will this thing go',I like the snap of it....that bike has plenty of snap!
I bought mine from a friend who REFUSED to sell it to his BROTHER....because he didn't have enough riding experience! that V65 is NOBODY'S first bike...high probability of it being the last ride they take!

Difficult Shifting as mentioned above, knock in bottom, sluggish, Rt side panel not matched .....It was an hour from home, I took my trailer, it just didn't excite me,
The 750 Shadow tomorrow is an hour the other direction, same money, sparkling shine, 1/3 of the mileage, almost the same as my old '83 500 Shadow..........:?

That's too bad. I was hoping a nice '83 was to be had for 'ya. A lot '83's were hammered hard. By the time the '84's+ came out, word had spread about the trans problem with second gear. Straight-cut gears were part of the problem. Just too much power for the design. Beveling the gears in later years help to cure the problem.

I like those mid/late '80's Shadows. More subdued and laid-back. Those were the best years for most Honda cruisersas to styling IMO.

Maybe the Magna wasn't for me, I missed an '84 V45 Magna on Friday by 1/2 hour. There is another V45 in town but it's not as clean & a bit of a Tacky paint job.
This is the Shadow.

My next door neighbor bought one a couple of years ago and never rode it. sat in the garage till he sold it at a big loss a week ago (he's going through a divorce). Dunno why he bought it in the first place.

Just from the looks of it, I think you'll have much better luck with this one. A nice looking bike.

The Shadow is a very different bike from the Magna. I had an '84 V65 Magna and I loved it. Very true that it should never be someone's first bike. Unreal amount of power. The shadow is a V-twin (as opposed to the V-4 that the Magnas are) and won't be nearly as scary power-wise. The V-45 Magna is a 750 (the V-65 is 1100) but still quick and lots of torque. I don't recall if hey had the same issues (shifting, etc) as the 65s did. The rattle you heard may have been the cam tensioner. Seems that was a notorious problem on the 65s too. More annoying than anything. All the bikes you mentioned are great bikes. Honda built some fine machines back in the early to mid 80s. You'll do well with any of them.

Well got the 750 home, looks like the picture, needed battery but started fine with boost, needs tune-up, new brakes & tires, now for some warmer weather 20* & flurries again this morning :X:X
Thanks for all the info. :byebye:

Congrats Bob! Looks like you got a nice bike.

One of my brothers had an '83 V65 Magna that he bought new. I put a lot of miles on it for him. :action: It was a fun bike but way too easy to get in trouble with, because it hit 100+ way easy.

Can anyone tell me if the Shadow 500 & 750 exhaust are the same # (SANKEI 2137 HM MF5) :(:(, I've found these for a 500 but not sure if they will fit the 750.

Thanks
