/forums/images/emoticons/sad.gif On a '85 Aspencade , floorboard equipped, and Crash bar equipped, the lower engine mounting bolt , right side,  is a huge  bolt, projecting almost 2 inches from the frame. It causes the muffler downpipes to "hang " , preventing complete removal of the muffler to the floor.... I did get the starter out  by gentle prying on the other side... which was the whole point of removing all this clutter... and its being tested and repaired... but... I would like to replace all 4 muffler "crush " gaskets.. while I have come this far.. so..... Does anyone know if this big lower  engine mounting bolt is... a) a drift thru bolt ?/forums/images/emoticons/smile.gifb) removable with a double nut trick?/forums/images/emoticons/mad.gif or c) muffler has to be disassembled around it?./forums/images/emoticons/confused.gif. and if, perchance, I cannot get it out ....  can crush gaskets be safelty re-used without chancing an exhaust leak ?/forums/images/emoticons/emoticonsxtra/gunhead.gif  SilverDave

Wow, my memory has gone, I don't remember a bolt like that on my 86 SEI. But someone will come along soon with the answer to that question. Can't you get clearance if you separate the headers from the muffler? You might need new gaskets between them, quite often they break when coming apart. As for the exhaust port gaskets, pretty good idea to get replacements, reusing them is really asking for leaks. It sounds like you got the headers off without breaking a stud, that's good luck!

I hope you are keeping the bike leaning left on the side standwhile the starter is out or that you've secured the starter sprocket so it can't fall.

I suppose I could separate the headers from the mufflers... I was trying to drop the exhaust as a single unit/forums/images/emoticons/confused.gif...  and Yes.. the bike is sitting on its sidestand... and Yes,  all the boards ,and crash bars, and rad grill just came out of a quick trip in the dishwasher , looking much better.......and as for the %&#@%  studs./forums/images/emoticons/mad.gif. yes..I got the headers removed enough to get the starter out.. most  of  nuts came off as they should... but two of them backed the entire stud out, the nuts were so badly rusted on /forums/images/emoticons/emoticonsxtra/gunhead.gif... Should I just re-install them as a "set"... or should I try to separate the nut from the stud by boiling them in penetrating oil ?/forums/images/emoticons/mad.gif and the starter guy just called.. the starter is cleaned ,and rebuilt.../forums/images/emoticons/big_grin.gif  and ready to pick up!

hi silverdave i think the bolt that your on about is the lower engine mounting bolt that just drifts out i would use penetrating oil first and let it soak in first then use gental persuasion

Wouldn't hurt to get them loose. I'd use new nuts with a touch of antisieze just to make my life easier in the future. The woman who hangs around here is pretty open minded about the kitchen, I've used the dishwasher for some judicious cleaning and the oven for heating various parts and coatings in the past. As long as it doesn't smell up the place she seems to let it go by.

SilverDave,
I too have an '85 Aspencade with floor boards. My thru bolt sticks out the left side more than the right. I looked in my Clymer manual, and it looks like the bolt pulls out the left side. Using a hardwood block and hammer, you should be able to tap the bolt to move it out of the way.
If your shifter seal is starting to leak, now is a good time to replace it.

/forums/images/emoticons/extrasmilies/cooler.gifCool!.. I love this board.. one 2x2 wooden block.. one "Thwack" with hammer.. and bolt was out.. and entire  Exhaust crashed magnificantly to the ground... /forums/images/emoticons/cool.gif so now ... new exhaust nuts, and shifter seal ? ok, ok  .. the list never ends../forums/images/emoticons/confused.gif
