I too have an '85 Aspencade with floor boards. My thru bolt sticks out the left side more than the right. I looked in my Clymer manual, and it looks like the bolt pulls out the left side. Using a hardwood block and hammer, you should be able to tap the bolt to move it out of the way.
If your shifter seal is starting to leak, now is a good time to replace it.
