85 GL1200A Turn Signal woe's

My turn signals won't work. I just replaced the left handle switch with a new one (took me 3 days to find it). 4-ways work fine. Swapped the turn signal and 4-way flashers, didn't help. Ok, I've read all of the posts on here about the 86 GL1200 Turn signal problems. I have the schematics (I'm a fork lift tech, so I can read them just fine). I have most of the top of the bike apart. I would like to take the canceling unit out of the circuit because I believe that is the problem. Any suggestions? I've been at it since I got home tonight! I read in one of the posts that grounding out the blue/red wire would bypass the cancelling unit. I tried it and that didn't work either (or I grounded out the wrong wire).

Sorry, don't know much about this, Russ.

My only thought is...are those left switch housings the same for all years and if not, could you have been given the wrong year?

Usually, turn signal woes are cured by cleaning that switch.

Buy electrical tester. Then stare at electrical diagram until you understand how current goes. After you understand you will check wires step by step.
I almost never buy switches, I take them apart and clean.
Sometimes I draw diagram to understand it better. Post diagram here and I will tell you step by step which wire to check.

A large percentage of times it is the flasher relay that causes the signals to not work.

I've flip-flopped the flashers several times. They both work properly in the hazard connector. I think this is a very specific problem in either the turn signal cancel unit or the position relay. It decided to work for about 2 minutes this morning and then quit again.
