86 charging issues

I am considering purchasing an 86 interstate. I know the 84s thru 87s had stator issues, but I thought that one of the years was exempt from that. Am I wrong?

Not that I'm aware of. All GL1200's suffer this I believe. Steve

No such luck. If there was an "Exempt" GL-1200, the world would be all over it.

The good news is - if/when the stator does fail, it's not THAT BAD to pull the engine and change. (really).

The better new is - some like the belt-driven alternator "poorboy" solution as well.

I was under the impression that only the 84/85's had the problem, and one of those years even had a factory re-call. My stator crapped out on my way home during my first trip to Georgia with only 55K on the clock. Lucily I was close, and the battery got me to the driveway. :shock:



Don't let the stator put you off from 1200 owner-ship. It's not an impossible job to replace. Even more-so if you go the "POOR BOY" route. The interstate is a great ride, of course I'm just a little Biased.... :gunhead:
