My 85 LTD had similar symptoms. You may want to check the vacuum lines directly in front of the air box. You may need to pull it out to access all of the lines. Check at the "T" and replace the hoses if necessary. Any kind of vacuum leak in this area will cause backfiring. The hoses are very easy to knock off when replacing your air filter. LOL
