89 1500 carb issues

599 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  HelpR
Bike sat at a shop for a year and clogged the gas tank and carbs. Shop mech could not get the carbs clean or at least not to where the bike would run smooth. Will a set of 91 carbs fit on the 89? Thinking I need to replace them rather tan mess with it. Any help? What is best? Here is what was done so far: honda mech cleaned carbs twice (got worse rather than better), cleaned gas tank, used sea foam on 1/2 tank (no luck) now bike won't even start.

I posted my 1st thread in the wrong forum I think, under trikes &trailers. Will "91 carbs fit on an '89? Had Honda mech work on the carbs twice and it only got worse. Now bike won't even start. Think I need to replace them as an overhaul kit might be useless. Anyone know which is best? Bike sat in a shop for a year. That's how these problems came about.
My 88 sat for 7 years. Was able to clean the carbs, but needed new fuel pump as the old one was messed up and rusty. How is your fuel pump/filter? The jetting was changed in 90 from the 88/89 set up. My 88 runs like a champ.
Put on a new pump when gas tank was cleaned. trying to order a carb kit from Randakks but their site won't let me order.
The carbs will fit. There may be some difference in some of the electrical sensors and you can probably change the old ones over. There are a lot of older threads with more specific info about putting later carbs in older GL1500's, you should use the search to find them.
