Really need more information.
What model bike? Good idea to place your bike info inyour profile signature so everyone knows when you post.
Will the bike start with the clutch lever pulled, it should?
Is everything else working correctly?
If the bike won't start with the clutch pulled and the neutral light out, then could be Engine Stop Switch dirty, Reverse Relay not working, Reverse Switch dirty, or maybe, but doubtful, inline diode almost out.

My '89 may be different from your '91. On my 1989 GL 1500 the Gearshift sensor is located on the right front of engine, above the oil filter. The connector for it is a 6 pin black connector located behind the right marker light.

I would grab a schematic and see what other componentstie into that circuit because it may not be the nuetral switch/lite. There could be broken or shorted wiresinvolved; maybe eventhe kickstandswitch ect. The nuetral switch onmost bikes have one wire and are located around the lower half of the engine cases aroundthe shiftshaft area. The nuetral switch may or may not be there buttake a look around that area.

Good luck!

It might be the reverse switch! Remove the reverse lever handle and reach through the opening and depress the reverse switch a few times after spraying with lube. I can access mine by removing the reverse handle or the left hand side panels, it is tight but works great for me.
