Got a cruise control problem and was just wondering if I needed to replace the entire cruise unit. If I set it at a certain speed, i.e. 65 lets say, in a few seconds the bike will speed up to 70 or so and then back off down to 65. It will continue to do this surge up and then back down. My accelerate button works to some degree. I can tap it and the speed will increase more than I want it to. My decrease button does not even work at all. Most concerned about the surging issue. Any answers to this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million!

Is your speedometer 'twitching/jumping' as well?

If it is, check/replace your speedometer cable, as it is about to fail, causing your speedometer to twitch/jump around a bit. This is a common problem that makes your cruise control 'surge' when set. Another, but less common problem, is the speed sending unit in your front wheel's axle, where the speedo cable connects to, is stripped/stripping(due to worn out/binding speedometer cableand making the speedo bounce/fail, but check your cable 1st.

When your speedometer cable/drive goes, so does your CC, self cancelling turn signals and your automatic volume control on the sound system, as they are all dependent on the speedometer.

Basically all speedo cables are the same, the problem on a Wing is the rotor covers have to come off( bit of a jigsaw )to gain access to the removal screw at the front wheel(clutch side). Also you will need small hands to get a grip on the top end where it connects to the clock.Try turning the handle bars all the way left and put you hand thru the big gap you have made on the right side of them .If you follow the speedo cable up from the wheel you should have an idea of where you will find the top of the cable .You might even be able to get it off with your hand .

That speedo cable will come out the bottom.. Mine was jumping so I changed out the cable and shield as a unit.. If I ever do it again and the cable isn't broke, I'll just pull out the inter cable at the bottom, grease it and shove it in and out a few times cleaning it each time.. When it comes out clean grease it again slide it in and put the rest back together.. Getting to that nut behind the speedo is a bare...........

It's pretty easy to replace the speedometer cable. Check your pm for my suggestions and helpful tips. I replaced mine a couple of years ago.
