99 GL 1500SE Starter issue

789 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  SMEDEN(=the blacksmith)
My bike is in excellent condition with 39K miles on it. A few days ago, the starter engaged but would not turn over the engine. I heard it go in and engage, but that's it. Lights are bright, but I charged up the battery anyway thinking for some reason the battery went down....same result. I bought a new battery....same result.

Before I buy a rebuild kit for the starter and pull it, is there a relay or something I should check first? I would think not since the solenoid kicked the gear forwards to the engine, but just checking if anyone else has had this issue. Would appreciate any help.

Update, I got the starter off, bench tested it and it spins. But with no load on it.......
I took mine to an automotive electrical shop with new bearings and brushes and had them clean/refresh it. Well worth the little bit of money (not very much actually).
When you reinstall it be sure the reverse gears are correctly meshed before tightening those long bolt screws. You don't want to break anything there.

Got dust and crud in my starter switch in hot, dry conditions and it acted like that until I disassembled the switch and shot it full of brake parts cleaner. Magic. good as new.
Do you hear the starter spin when you push the button or just the heavy click?
I have never understood the importance of just hearing a click on the MC.

At the same time starter relays are supposed to operate so does the headlight relay.

Put a test light or DMM on starter relays for accurate checking and not just a click somewhere on the MC.
I'm sure Dave will be back with you but in the mean time you might put the starter back on. Put a voltmeter and read voltage when you push the start button and hear the click. I suspect you might see little or none. If that is the case check for output at the starter relay. I suspect it is a relay or connection issue.
Are you sure your engine is turning free ? , - it COULD be a hydrolock or engine damage .
Put bike on centerstand and in 5th gear and turn rear Wheel by hand (remove ignition key first ).
I have never understood the importance of just hearing a click on the MC.

It clears things up a bit. He said the starter engaged but now we know it did not. If he heard the starter spin we would know there is a serious problem but since there is only a click we now know to check for power to the starter as you suggested.
Thanks all, came to the same conclusion (electrical somewheres), I put the starter back on last night. Will start going thru the electrical side of the trouble shooting this weekend. Hopefully a quick fix..... :(
Problem solved.....When I put the starter back in, the manual said manually jump it at the bolt off the starter....it turned the engine over at that point. Somewhere I heard if the headlite goes off when you hit the starter button check the #6 relay, it did so I then switched the #6 relay even tho it tested good and it started right up.......hopefully that does it.......life is good again!!!!
The headlight is supposed to go off when you hit the starter button-- this allows all available current to turn and start the motor without the headlight's electrical competition.
Somewhere I heard if the headlite goes off when you hit the starter button check the #6 relay,
Whoever said that had no clue how things work but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then. If it fixed it you can't argue with success.
Truth of it is, a wrench is somewhat a foreign object in my hands, so I completely agree with dave......sure as hell am glad the acorn fell my way this time....didn't want to have to pay the bucks for the diagnostics.....Thanks to all for the interest...this is still the Greatest Site around.....
