Access key for fuel door

I wanted to put a perminate knob and key on the fuel filler door and had an Access 27R key cut at home depot. The key works correctly (won't start engine but will open the fuel door). Do I just cut the rubber end off the key and add the new knob or is something else involved? Would like to hear from someone who has done this.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum from the Buckeye State!!!!!
Should work as you described. Put the key in the lock, mark it with a sharpie marker for depth (the key), cut the rubber off of the key, cut a slot in the knob. Fit the key to the slot in the knob. Get some JB weld (stuff will fix anything) to secure the key to the knob, allow the JB wend to COMPLETELY set up before putting key into slot. That should just about fix you up! That is my two cents worth on how to do that project.

I did that on my 79, went to radio shack picked up 1/4 inch shaft knob, cut and filed down key put in the knob tighten the set screw and worked great, was in there for years. Mel:waving:
