Should work as you described. Put the key in the lock, mark it with a sharpie marker for depth (the key), cut the rubber off of the key, cut a slot in the knob. Fit the key to the slot in the knob. Get some JB weld (stuff will fix anything) to secure the key to the knob, allow the JB wend to COMPLETELY set up before putting key into slot. That should just about fix you up! That is my two cents worth on how to do that project.
