Advise on HID system, GL1200

1708 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Richardrwg
I'm looking at upgrading to an HID system and found this one on ebay. I just need someone who is familiar with these systems to look at it and let me know if it will work my 86 1200. If not, I'm open to suggestions.

Also, any advise on how to wire this in would be GREATLY appreciated.:praying:

Ummm..... Where's the link?

Tim
since you didn't post an email link have no idea what kit you were thinking about buying,
i would go for the bi xenon and a better kit, the cheaper kits dont like the heat and the bumps also i would go bi xenon so you will have high beam
This is what you need, get the 4300k. http://www.ebay.com/itm/55W-Motorcy...Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d388385d&vxp=mtr
Or you could get a car kit and have 2 sets.

On the way to work this morning a guy in a truck ahead of me stopped and flagged me down and asked what kind of headlights I had, said he could see them a mile away and wanted some for his bike.
I had thought about HID for my GL1200 but decided against it.

The reason being I only have one head light bulb but it has two filaments and if one burns out I can get home on the other.

With the HID I would have one filament, a ballast and a relay to shutter between low and high beam.
If either the filament or ballast failed at midnight I'd be camping on the side of the road.

My only problem with ones like this is that they're in Hong Kong or China, and I'm not going to call over there and give the info from my card.

I am thinking about getting 2 sets and having a back up.
This is the kit that I am running in my Red Cbr which is going well so far considering it doesn't have a timer/ delay circuit

And if you are worried about it shaking apart have a look at my driveway video

Here is another HID system that has been recommended quite a few times here.

This is a BI-Xeon system in H4 format that will give you High and Low beams. The seller has a very high rating and does a lot of business with very little complaints against them.

BTW – Nobody should be giving any body their card information! That’s why you should be using PayPal. You are completely covered against fraud.

have to agree that the system which richardrwg posted is not the best for the the 1200,plus i run a poorboy so running home on foglights or driving lights is not a problem

as long as you carry a spare H4 bulb (original) the system can be converted back as easily as replacing a bulb, but then again at midnight on a backroad with no tools or a flashlight isn't a good time....lol

attached is an HID install i posted on another site, worked excellent for me on several 1200's,someone posted links to 1500 and 1800's a couple weeks ago that made those conversions easy too

I wouldn't use a 55w system in a 4cyl GW with a standard charging circuit. The 35w kit is heaps bright enough and almost halves your current consumption.
The other advantage of using these HID kits is the power comes from the battery now and there is very little power going through the headlight/ignition switch
I have just posted a video that shows how well the 35w HIDs light up the street/speed limit signs as I am riding.

The 91 CBR had 2 45w headlight bulbs which I have replaced with 1 35w HID. Now that I am happy with the HID I will install the second one. The main advantage is the bike is so easily seen during the day with the HID. Also the kit I used doesn't have a movable ring/reflector ( which failed around here on all the early ones) but 2 filaments.
