This one has a spring that pull's it shut.
If I open it by hand, with the suction side
connected it slows down the idle, and seems
to not run as rich. I think it is broken, but it
would have to be closed to choke the engine
to start when cold, and open as it warm's up.

Not a choke. This bike is injected, so no need for a choke. A carburated engine is "dumb", hence the need for a choke. This is strictly a idle speed controller. Controlled only by water temp, and applying battey voltage to the electrical connector (electric heater). Not hooked up to computer at all, contrary to popular opinion. It's actually hooked to the fuel pump circuit. When the fuel pump goes off, so does the electric heater in this air valve. Hope this helps.
I thought the fuel pump ran constantly? Will it hurt to wedge
this thing open and run it that way? The exhaust does not
kill you instantly when the valve is open. Some body has the
valve on ebay...item number 4545021009. Hate to buy it if
a sensor somewhere is not telling it to open. Wife has me
on a very limited bike budget.
Not hooked to the ecu (computer) in any way. It should be open a certain amount by default. The colder it is, the more it's open, and the longer it takes to close. It's a gradual process. Doesn't just "snap" shut. Sounds like you have aother issues. Try reading some of this stuff. http://www.intouchmail.net/~fmattox/limited/manual.html As for the fuel pump, it runs constantly, as long as the engine is running. If you turn the key on, don't start, you'll notice it goes off after cpl. secs. When it goes off, so does the heater on that air valve. Again, the air valve is nothing but an idle speed control, for when the engine is cold.
When I say " not hooked up to ecu", I mean it's not a sender, receiver of any kind. But it's heater is turned on or off by ecu, as well as fuel pump, via a relay. So the ecu only controls the fuel pump/heater relay.
O.K. I started the bike and found out that I had the engine speed
backwards. It idles at around 900 with the valve closed and up
around 1300 with valve open. If it is naturally supposed to be
open it is broke. The spring would then pull it closed as needed.
I just dont know.:baffled:
Guess I'll buy one and find out.
