Is this really needed???

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/09/08/tech/main828341.shtml

AP)Honda Motor Co. has developed airbags for motorcycles that the Japanese automaker says is the world's first for production motorcycles.

The airbag, which inflates after sensors detect an oncoming crash, will be available on the new Gold Wing motorcycle that will go on sale in spring 2006 in the United States, Honda said Thursday.

Tokyo-based Honda said the airbags will reduce injuries in head-on collisions.

The airbag opens in front of the riders and reduces the speed at which they get thrown off the motorcycle, lessening injuries when they hit the road or another vehicle, it said.

This looks like a great product (lolololol). Perhaps you can wave at the airbag as you careen over the front windshield in case of an accident. The next thing Honda will come out with will be seatbelts.

Actually i watched a show on TLC? that had this very thing on it. BMW is also going to be adding airbags. They showed some video of a bike with a crash dummy on ithitting a car in the side with and with out airbags. Let me tell you i really believe this WILL SAVE LIVES and make for less severe injuries. I know it sounds goofy but after seeing it in action I want one.

With the scar on my upper lip from my accident in '88 as a reminder, I can tell you I'd get one of these in a heartbeat, if I could afford it :(.

I suppose it will be useful in a head-on collision, although the bag itself might knock you sideways off the bike and then you would run the risk of being run over by another vehicle. :?:?

Actually it would save alot of lives in a "T- Bone" accident, if someone pulls put in front of you!

The guy I saw get killed a couple of months ago would still be alive with a "Air bag"" because he hit the passenger window at 60 MPH!:baffled:

I just posted this on the general discussion forum as well (didn't spot this thread till now);

"About the airbag, I wonder if the sensors are fitted into the front wheel? It seems the most likely place as airbag sensors are usually fitted at the furthest point from the driver in a car, ie the bumper because that's the first thing top get hit in a head-on collision.
If the sensors are really in the wheel, I wonder if the airbag could be blown when the wheel hits a pothole."

The air bag might go off by hitting a pothole, but the breaking of the frame at the same time should help absorb the air bag deployment shock :D:D

Come on riders...what do you think?

I suppose the next step would be to develop a passenger air bag that is mounted in the back of the drivers jacket or helmet (lol).:D:D

After seeing the show on TLC, I think it is a lot like seat belts in a car. They will save your life or reduce more serious injury most of the time andrarely will cause death or more serious injury. On a bike, I think it would not be quite a good as in a car, but would save many livesand reduce injuries most of the time.

I do not want to see this pushed down our throats for safety's sake but this is an idea that should be checked out. I was not a seat belt believer until my life was more than likely saved by them.

If one goes out and buys the top of the line GL1800 now, it won't have airbags. So you would be getting a bit cheated because the bags won't be fitted until middle of 2006.

What abouth having a passenger. Will the driver be squeezed between the airbag and the passenger?

I prefer to drive so I never will crash in anything.
