Good Evening. I took the advise of a GURU and took out my alternator to check the brushes. Getting the alternator out was easy and taking it apart was also easy. But the fun started putting the armature back in. I read the paper clip idea and tried it (with a struggle) but when I took the clip outone of the brushes broke. Now I need new brushes.

My questions are - Can the alternator brushes be replaced by DIY or must it go to a rebuilt shop. If it is a DIY, how are the brushes replaced. Second once the brushes are replaced how is the armature replaced?

No reason why you can't replace the brushes yourself, the paper clip method is the usual way it's done and it sounds like you forced the cover down before one of the brushes was all the way in. I'd say this is your first time to do this job, so it's just down to inexperience.
As a last resort, an alternator repair shop will pop the thing back together for only a few dollars. An experiened repair guy will have the unit pressed home in seconds.

Does the brush assembly simply pull straight out/up. There does not appear to be any nuts/bolts securingthe brush housing. I couldget a set of pliers around the blackhousing but was afraid to pull to hard.

Could someone explain thepaper clip method so I don't break the next/new set of brushes.

You can unsolder the brush wires from the rear of the holder and fit the new ones the same way. There are three nuts holding the fan assembly/brush box to the stator and you can pull the fan up enough if you need more room to solder.

That all sounds easy Martin, but if you haven't done this sort of job before it can be a very fiddly job.

Thanks for all the advise. I ended up taking the alternator to a pro. For $30 Cdn, I got new brushes and great service. Somethings are best left to the pros.

You did the right thing Blackhat. I tried splitting my GL1500 alternator once and had problems. Took me ages and then I ended up getting an auto-leccy to do it. He had the job done in very short time. I would have just wrecked it myself.

Ah well, off to work now....
