Amount of oil for GL 1800 for oil + filter change?

I've changed oil in all kinds of vehicle for 40 years. Purchased an 07, GL 1800 yesterday (12,000 miles). Changed the oil + filter. Added 3.9 qts. No reading on dip stick. Topped it off with the remainder of the oil to make it an even 4 qts + it stll doesn't register on the dip stick, unless I screw the dipstick all the way in. The bike is on a level surface on the center stand. I've checked it cold and checked it after warming the bike up + then letting it sit for a few minutes, as the book says. Should I actually add a little mor oil to bring it up to the full mark on the dip stick?

Changed the oil in mine about a month ago and had to add extra oil. Maybe half a quart. I checked it just like you did, scratched my head, and added enouogh oil to get it to full. I let mine drain for approx 20 minutes on the side stand and then put it on the center stand and let it drain until it quit. Just add a little at a time and don't over fill it.

By the way;

The manual does say 3.9qt. approximately. Some say that makes theirs overfull.

I just changed oil on my 02 1800 the other day and it took darn near all of the 4 qts less a little on the bottom of the 4th bottle that would hardly be enough to make an oil spot on the floor. I know I kept checking the dipstick thinking it's got to be full but I had to keep adding a bit at a time. So 4 qts less the little tiny bit left in the last bottle was what it took. I kind of had to wonder about that one.

Heat up engine, remove drain plug, remove filter, let drain. install drain plug, install new filter, dump in 4 qts. of oil, run engine to heat up, stop engine, wait awhile check oil, close enough!!! :) That's what I do.Don't want to over fill it.:waving:

I just dump in a gallon, put the dipstick back in and go, a little more or less is not going to matter one little bit.
