Another new member introduction and question

Hello to everyone from the Great White North (not so white right now though). Just getting back into bikes after 20+ years away. Looking to purchase a 1984 Goldwing Interstate in the next few days and have been lurking here fora little while watching, reading and learning. A lifetime ago I started on an old Yamaha 400 XS, then a 650 Maxim up to a 920 Virago and that's pretty much where it ended.

The interim years being taken up with marriage, family etc and my old trusty Datsun 240Z sport car. Still have that little rocket but have had the bike urge growing for a few years now. My wife went for a ride with my buddy last week on his 1979 Goldwing and she is hooked now too.

I must say this group appears to be as friendly and knowledgeable as the group on my usual 240 site (and trust me, that's high praise when you see some of the other sites out there that are a total waste of time).

Looking forward to riding, learning and making new friends. The biggest question I have right now is regarding insurance. I live around Ottawa Canada. Anybody local have a recommendation as to company or broker? I've done some online searching and have prices ranging from $ 800.00 up to $ 1500.00 This tells me there is something wrong with the insurance industry but also that I may not be looking in the right place.

those are incredibly high prices for insurance, although I know that they vary in the US state by state. Also, you may wish to consider having only liability insurance. Look for companies that mainly do motorcycle insurance. A lot of the car companies don't want motorcycles so have very high rates on insurance

Todd look around I'm in Ontario and only have PL & PD on my 84 and its around $400.00 you just have to check all over.

Welcome to the best and friendliest Goldwing forum on the net Todd. Can't help you with Canadian insurance as I'm on the other side of the border, but there are enough Canadian members here to advise you.

I don't know if it's something wrong with the insurance industry or something wrong in the judicial system that awards huge awards for frivolous law suits... probably somewhere in-between.

In Oregon I pay about $80 a year for the minimum. You'd think it would be less in Canada due to traffic being less dense (in most places).

Welcome Toddz240, I once had the Fairlady Z, the Japan version of your's that was even faster yet. Different engine and tranny. Believe you will like your wing, they are pure comfort.

Actually I don't know why Canada should be pricier for insurance. I though they had a lot less litigation and didn't have the ridiculous awards. I'm not surprised the UK and Ireland have high prices, those folks pay through the nose for everything, but Canada has a price structure similar to the US for the most part.

Those new meds seem to be working well. You seem a lot more mellow of late. Of course if you get too nice and pleasant, we'll have to tug your chain a bit!:jumper:

If you pay cash you may only want to put basic "Liabilty" ins on it ?

But if you wreck it ,they won't fix it ?

The Walmart chain of stores in the US and elsewhere often hire folks who otherwise might be put out to pasture to stand at their doorways and say "Welcome to Walmart" to people entering their stores. A somewhat new idea in the US but common in Japan. I would have applied for the job but have difficulty memorizing the line and they won't spring for a teleprompter.
