The voltage to increase or decrease the autovolume comes from the speedometer sensor on the fron wheel (left side). Very carefully, remove it and clean it out. It operates on a mechanical / electrical impulse generated with each turn of the gear off the axle shaft. If there is any dirt or dust accumulated in the box, the voltage output is weak and although the speedometer is working, there is not enough current to vary the volume control receiver for the radio.
Also, look at the volume control box again. Double check the connections for metal to metal contact and cleanliness. Also, pull the radio and inspect the slider receiver contacts in the back for the same thing.. They tend to get sloppy with time.. Re-tighten all connections and try the bike again. Let us know if that works or not.. There are other steps to test / inspect the autovolume system on these bikes.. Last but not least, the partsare available now and again on E-Bay. I've got an 86 Aspy, and would be lost without the auto volume controls...
