I've heard that the Auto volume on the 1200's often doesn't work. (Not surprising since it wasn't much good on the 1800 either) While tearing the bike down, cleaning it up and installing the J&M intercom junction unit I removed the auto volume module, cleaned all the connections and put it back together. Now even the tone function does little or nothing. Anyone have any direction concerning what fails on these units? I can unsolder and remove components from the PCB but I'm not keen on "easter egging" the job.

Thanks renegade, I'll be changing out the front tire in about a thousand miles I'll service the speedo drive then. I would guess that it sends out pulses that require an O-scope to read. I think my radio contacts are good because I have no static or dropout on bumpy roads. I think maybe my spray clean on the Tone Pot did it in because now when I rotate it I just get some low level intermittant noise and minimal tone change.

Does the auto volume work on the headsets or just speakers?

Well if auto Volume only works on the speakers I'm not too concerned about it since I always listen to headsets. I will however clean the speedo drive regardless. Any recomended special lube for the drive assy?

OK I've got the Front wheel off and I'm looking at the speedo drive assy. Not much to it on the out side 2 cams that ride in 2 slots on the wheel. By cleaning the drive do you mean removing the 4 small screws on the black housing and cleaning the actual encoder assy? That would usually ruin an encoder but without doing that I don't see cleaning the cams doing much. The shop manual says to just clean it, no details.

THANKS Tricky!!!!! At least now I have a benchmark to check. I'll have to see if I can dig up my ol Cheapo analog VM. Digitals don't do to well on these types of signals.
