just another damn good reason to continue to keep Windows Updates blocked on my Win7 desktop.

and tonight, I am going to make another Macrium Reflect full disk image of the HDD.

been way too long since I last did that.

EDIT: ??? WTH, 18 months?

that was before Mardonna got so ill..... life got twisted up with her being in the hospital.

I have 2 OEM Windows 7 Professional DVDs to install Windows onto a PC.

I tried to use them last month, and they won't work anymore.
WTH ??

I am going to try again, this time w/o the internet anywhere close to the PC under test.
it is making me wonder if the original DVDs had a Drop Dead Date encoded into the install CDs??

I was doing this on a laptop, and it did not have a LAN cable hooked to it.

.

That wouldn't be a surprise.

Now I know why the Windows10 laptop was doing strange things, adding what it wanted and changing stuff. I got rid of it fast. I guess the Windows Vista recovery disks will self destruct when I turn the last laptop into a place for old games, it will not see the internet.
The Windows10 laptop is running Xfce and it's faster too. I switched over the OS this evening. Windows7 will see its final days on the internet soon.

my golf cart now has a convertible roof.

a wind storm came in here about 0700 and tore the top right off of it.
took down a lot of tree limbs, some six inches in diameter.

our burn pile is now 20 feet high again, 3rd time this year.

I'm having excellent luck with 1803 on 4 pcs, with one exception. My HP Phoenix i7 refuses to be accessed on my network. I've tried everything, to no avail. Keeps asking for "network credentials". Grrrr ! Hundreds of "fixes"on Google, Yahoo, etc., that do not work. I can push from that machine, but I can't pull from it, if you know what I mean. So, I have to push.

I decided to alert all of my email friends as well, here is what I wrote to them.

a friend of mine runs a sign shop, makes those wraps for cars, boats, etc...
T-shirts, ball caps, whatever needs a Graphic Design.

last April the Windows Security Updates crashed her Win10 pc so bad that it corrupted both of her backup hard drives.... it cost her $1,000s of bux to have a FBI Forensic quality guy find all of the files that were lost.

here are two links you need to read, and follow up on the 2nd link to the best of your ability. At a very minimum, you need to install Macrium Reflect and start making monthly backups of your Windows PCs now to an external USB hard drive....

As of today the Windows7 laptop has been retired and all passwords and an html file of book marks will be coming over to Xfce. That laptop will be used for a counted cross stitch program and doesn't need to be disrupted. I wouldn't be surprised if an update for Windows7 and 8.1 aren't encrypted to slowly corrupt the operating system and one day render it worthless.

I'm sure they are. I haven't let my W7 update at all for a couple years.

Val,

follow that 2nd link and use option #1 if it will work, if not, use option #4

you can turn Updates off on it, IIRC, in Win7 you have the option to do that in the Updates window anyway.

I have turned off the Win7 updates to my PC for 2 years now, and it has not suffered a single instance of being victimized... and it is online 24/7 and has been so since the day I bought it 10 years ago...

I just can't understand all the ballyhoo of folks lurking around trying to get into PCs.....
from my experience, that only happens to targets big enough to gain some $$$$$ from...
like a bank, or the IRS just for the hell of it.

hackers are NOT going to waste time looking for $$$ in a single PC sitting somewhere out there in nirvana land.

The demon of disaster land is actually Micro$oft and their "security updates",
they have caused more damage than all of the hackers in the world combined.

The update is off as of now and all is well. I'm looking into getting a 1TB external HDD for the Windows7 laptop so I can clean up the box of CD's and have them in files on it instead of a box of random CDs to find the one I need the info off.
The Xfce laptop is working well and handling everything that is asked of it to do and that's good.
I ran the task manager on Xfce and it hardly uses any memory or CPU, no wonder its happy in that laptop with 4 ram and 2.16 Ghz processor.
I saved that site and hopefully it will work with Window7.

That my friend is an absolute fact. I haven't had a moment's trouble since I turned updates off.
Knock on wood.
Before I did that something went wrong regularly.

Job 1 done.

Used the above link to verify that I was indeed changing the correct Registry Link,
and in services.msc Windows Update was set to OFF...

so, 2 doors are locked on Cyndi's Win10 computer

then, I hooked up the 6TB USB HDD and made a new Full Image Backup via Macrium Reflect.

all is better now.....
her old laptop with Win7 has not had an update in about 5 years, and it has not complained about that once.

Sounds like he wants to take over and no one will be allowed to have a computer. History repeating itself only the technology has changed, first it was burning books and now controlling your computer.
You're right, found that here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=233837
Time to make a hackentosh.

they will do it through the cell phones and social media. if pc are the backup for that plan, well, there goes the backup. social media is already commanding riots and violence against anyone who doesnt follow the PLAN.

as far as pc becoming pay to play terminals, just think of how business and politics will be manipulated. no need to vote, AI will tell you the best candidate!! wher is that little mini me?
