Hey all you darksiders I just installed an Austone 165R16 on the rear of my 2002 1800 and it wont fit. Even without air in the tire it rubs on the back of the swing arm down the center of the tire and on the right side of the tire along the front of the tire. It is also way to close to that electrical module that is mounted on the left side. So after much research on what kind of CT to use this is the one that I chose based on what you all had to say in hear and other 1800 forums. So what the hell gives??? No one mentioned anything about different years not being compatable. I AIN'T a happy camper :lash::lash::lash: Anyone got an answer........

I thought the Austone was good on the 1500's, not sure I ever heard of one on the 1800's.

The 1800's do have a lot more options available in CT's, whereas the 1500 options are very limited.

The Austone tire is definitely taller than the others, but not as wide.

That tire is the one people use for the 1500s. On the 1800s we use the 195/55-16, 195/60-16s, 205/55-16s and a few of us brave souls run a 205/60/16, but it will rub a little if you run higher than 40 psi. (I run 37 in mine) I've never heard of anyone running the Austone taxi tire on a 1800. It's too tall, anyway.:)

I have not heard of the Austone working on the 1800.

Ok lets try this one more time. Has anybody tried a Hankook Optimo H426. 195/60/16 ? Looks like a nice tire. 115.00 dollars from The Tire Factory. I can have it tomorrow. Does anybody know the dia. of the tire? I do not want anything smaller in dia. then the junk E3 that was on there. A little larger in dia. would be nice. WILL THIS TIRE FIT THE 1800 ???

PS, I need to clarify FIT. Mount the tire on the rim, mount the rim back onto the bike, drive away. No grinding, cutting, filing, modifying anything. If any of that needs to be done, well, then it doesn't FIT.

Have you checked the dedicated 'darkside websites/forum pages for the 1800? They might be a good source. Sorry for no direct answer from me.
If memory serves, that is one of the correct sizes for the 1800.

the 195/55r16 is almost identical height to the stock tire (I believe 0.1" shorter) so there is no noticeable difference in speedo, rpm or height. that size also has a lot of options both rf & nrf. the 195/60r16 is about 0.5" taller than stock tire but still fits with no issues, the speedo will be slightly lower than your speed compared to stock tire & speed, rpms slightly less for actual speed, it will raise the rear of the bike about 0.25" & less options available. the 175/60r16 is about 0.5" shorter than stock, speedo will read higher than actual speed & will lower the rear of the bike about 0.25".
the 205/55r16, 205/60r16 & 195/65r16 all have been reported as rubbing on some bikes yet some say they are fine. the austone taxi tire 175r16 is about 2.5" taller than gl1800 stock & will not fit.
check out gl1800riders.com, there is a "darkside forum" at the bottom.

OK. Thanks for all your answers and help. And crazyman, thanks for the info on the tire sizes. I want a tire that is a little larger in dia. as my speedo reads about 10 % high with that E3 so it looks like I might take a chance with the 195/60/16 as you say it is .5 inches taller then stock. I am pretty sure that will be ok but not the 2.5 inch difference I measured between the E3 and the Austone. The austone fit in but it would not turn do to rubbing at the swing arm. And yes I know about the 1800 darkside forum.

I paid 152.00 for the Austone. So before I list it here and on craigslist, Crazyman you have first dibs and then anybody else who happens to see this post. Make me an offer.....:? It is brand new.

even though I have a gl1500 that I plan to put the austone on next time it's going to be a while before I wear out my current rear so i'll pass.

thanks anyway, crazzyrman

ps - it shouldn't be to hard to resell for a slight loss on this board or the gl1800riders board, there a lot of gl1500 darksiders that lurk over there. I currently have both gl1500 & gl1800 double dark.

I thought the best size for the 1500 was a 175 Austone...:?
