I'm looking into tires for my new to me GL1100 (still working on getting the title as soon asmy buddygets his new bike and I think the GLis an '82) and remember a few years back the night and day diffrence Dunlop D404's made for my '77 XS650. The GL11 is running D404's and they are hard as rocks and some lesser enlightened indavidual put the front tire on backward. :shock:
Under threshold braking the front end gets to chattering something nasty, then the head shaking starts,and I've even found it to do that cornering too and that gets your adrenaline going when it's trying to tank slap! I know the bike isn't a sportbike, I've ridden plenty of the latest and greatest and don't expect that from it, I just want some stability!
So, basically, anyone run a set of these? I've read they are great touring tires and provide enough grip to deck a side stand on a Triumph Bonnie (the new one) so I'm sure the road holding would do the trick. I'm planned on a fork brace, steering damper, and a good once over on the brakes this winter and tires seem like a good place to start in on getting this bike back up to par.
I had a nasty crash August 2008 on my Bandit 1200 and spent the last year either recovering mentally or physically. I spent ALOT of the summer on the dirt, getting myself back up to street riding level again because a return rider just getting back on a big bike can be a bad thing. It began on a Suzuki TS185, then a Yamaha RT180, up to a Honda XR250, made the jump onto my buddys XR650, then started riding a XV750 Virago (Tracker/Bobber)on the street here and there as well as the current GL1100 in my garage. I'm no where near the level I was 2 years ago, but I am ready to get back into it and a comfortable and somewhatforgiving bike like the GL seems to be my cup of tea. Not to mention I love love love love love love love boxerfour's!
I think I am ready to get everything together this winter and take back to the street on a bike again.
