Exactly as Rudy has stated. I recently had a similar experience. When I tested with volt meter I found Battery volts went down from 12.5v ( engine not running) to 11v with engine running. When stripped down the alternator had worn sliprings. I rebuilt the whole unit including a full wiring clean for £40 (a big saving on a new unit).
