hi guys I'm a new member and introduced myself in the new guys section and wanted to ask my first question. The 1982 gl 1100 interstate you see in my profile picture was purchased about a month ago. This Monday I was hit by a car and nationwide wants to total out the bike. My question is I am looking at either a 1986 gl 1200 sei or a 1992 gl 1500 interstate the Sei has a bout 75,000 miles and has been maintained according to schedule the 1500 interstate has 105,000 miles and has in equaly well maintained. The 86 is $2800 the 92 is $.4000 I would like you guys to chime in and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each these machines and which you would prefer. After riding the GL 1100 I would like to have more power of course, and the best handling possible. Which to you would be the better Steed?thanks guys I appreciate your feedback

Both are good bikes, depending on condition. The 86 SEI is fuel injected only made one year The 85 LTD is also fuel injected only made one year. There are parts that might be hard to find, but they usually are reliable and not problematic if properly serviced. The SEI and LTD were the only 1200's that had electronic cruise until the 1987Aspencade, the last year of the 1200. The 92 interstate is a basic bike, no reverse, no cruise, but also a good bike. It would depend on how the bikes were maintained, but with the 92 only being an interstate The $4,000 is pretty close to top dollar on that bike and the 86 sei would be closer to an average price for that year model. I would probably choose the 86 sei over the 92 interstate especially if funds were limited, more bang for the buck, if you like all the options. The only thing the 92 has going for it is it's a 1500, so you either get the 4 cyl 1200 with all the goodies or the 6 cyl 1500 stripped down. Both good bikes just depends on your preferences of what goodies you like.

If the SEI is running good, go with it. Much better than the interstate 1500. It will ride great and the FI is better than the carbs. Just make sure it charges properly. Test the charging circuits.
