I've been doing a fair amount of research on a single carb conversion for my GL 1200 but I'm still confused about the various VW clone carburetor models.
Can anyone tell me the specific model that would be best for a GL 1200 conversion.
Thanks
Scott

Make sure you have the correct amount of heat to the carb

Hi Jim, What do you mean regarding heat?
Single Carbs require heat to atomize the fuel molecules.
Some have a water jacket so you must plumb into the radiator water stream somehow.

Others, like the VW carbs, depend on Engine Heat being directed over the carb base, those are cranky, cold natured beasts.

Those little carbs cause a high velocity in the intake which tends to cause it to ice up, did on VWs real bad so they had a heat tube from the exhaust running along the intake. I don't know how people doing single carb conversions deal with it.

After reading many posts about VW carbs over the years, I am wondering why a 2 barrel off a small V6 or V8 engine would not work??? I am thinking it may be easier to adjust and maintain. VW carbs were known to be rather fussy to get to run correctly, at least of VW's.

That's my thought, they didn't work very well on a car they were made for so I wouldn't expect much.

Seems one of the biggest issues with SCC on a wing is getting the intake runners and carburetor properly warmed. If somebody could invent a heated baseplate (engine coolant circulating thru it) to go between the carb and manifold it might make a world of difference

Hi - I have an 83 1100 with a single carb conversion that I fitted, it doesn't ice up at all and that depends on whose manifold you buy- mine is fitted with a copy of an EMPI PICT 34 and it runs like a bird, the power improvement and acceleration is impressive- there is absolutely no need to heat the manifold if you choose the right system- most of the advice I have read about these kits and all the problems are simply not true, ( I am a hi performance tuning specialist with 30 years experience ( had my own shop with 15 employees in NZ)

What manifold setup do you have?

Hi - I am using one made by a clever dude in Lithuania of all places- he ships all over the World, he has studied the icing up problem of some systems and claims it all comes down to the plenum chamber design, at first I thought it was bs but he is right- maybe if you live in an ultra cold environment it could be a problem but I don't think it is - and the difference between the four carb set up and the single EMPI set up is incredible, it feels like a two stroke.... I am not sure if I am allowed to post a link for his stuff here, but here it is anyway ( he also does kits for ST 1100s and Viragos etc) very good guy to deal with very communicative and intelligent- I had to play with jetting for awhile, but got it sorted really well so if you need any help feel free to ask ( I read a lot of misleading information on this topic on various forums) Goldwing GL1000-1100 Single Carburetor Manifold ALUMINUM | eBay

no, when you fit a single carb it has its own unique filter, that is supplied with the kit

Not the filter,I meant the intake pipes that bolt to the heads
