Major panic tonight. Rode all day. Errands around town - took the long way most of time because it was so nice out. Then, down the highway about 50 miles to meet the inlaws for dinner andback home. The Wing was running great and I was feeling good.Tomorrow, me and the missus are heading outfor a 3 day trip on the Wing.

I pulled into the local convenience store/gas station on the wayhome around 11pm. Put it in neutral, dropped the kickstand, and shut it off. Took off gloves, helmet, jacket and went in the store. Came out about 10 mins later and suited up again. Turned they key - the lights came on, the dashboard lit up, and I pressed the starter. NOTHING! No starter cranking just the light going dim while the starter was pressed. I tried it again and again with the same result. That never happened before.

Now, I live out in the country and this convenient store/gas stationis a 20-30 min ride from anything. Longer if you're looking for a motorcycle repair facility or a tow truck. And, at 11pm there aren't going to be any bike shops open anywhere- I'm screwed. I called home and had my son start gathering tools and my Haynes to bring out to me. He wants to bring a rope to tow the Wing - "maybe we can pop the clutch after we get it rollingand start it", he says. In my mind, I see my beautiful Wing being dragged down the road on its side with orange sparks flying everywhere and tupperware being ground away while I lie in a ditchon the side of the road. "Forget the rope", I told him. "Just bring the tools and the book".

Still on the phone with him, I start shutting down non-essential things like the radio and going over all the guages one by one. Nothing unusual. Neutral light is on and kickstand is down. I pull up the kickstand and try again - nope. I shift it into gear and pull the clutch in - nope. Put it back into neutral and..... - nope. I shift my eyes to the handle bar, left to right. All the switches are where they usually are and ... wait. What's that big, sort of round switch by my right thumb? Is that the way it usually is? - nope. Flip it to the middle, press the starter, and vroom ...... I'm back in the game. Deep breath......... ok.

I've never used the Kill switch. Never think about it. Never entered my mind that that could be the problem. Must have hit it without realizing it when I got off the bike. Never happened before in the thousands of times I've gotten on/off bikes. Well, it did this time.

Still on the phone, I told my son I fixed it and was running again. I said I'd fill him in when I got home. Boy, did I feel like an idiot.

"Turned off the engine with the kill switch" is a subgroup of the "laid down the 'Wing" club. Welcome aboard. We've had various confessionals of this event over the years on the forum, nothing new under the sun and all that. As a member emeritus allow me to conduct the initiation ceremony!:cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1:

Now try it in the fast lane at a red light during rush hour and not figure it out till all the cars let you get over 4 lanes to the right rolling it by hand.

My sleeve did it while I was reaching over to adjust the radio while sitting at the light, stopped in neutral.

A good time was had by all but one.

The older wings will crank with the kill switch off but won't start. That's good for running the battery down. Glad to see they changed it. I always shut mine down with the kill switch. Lets me know its working and stays in my mind that it is there. Even though I use it all the time, I have still on occasion forgot to turn it back on and crank on the starter for a bit and sit there is astonishment saying, what the hell it wrong with this thing!

Earlier this spring, I took my Wing downtown into the heart of the city(which I had never done before-just too hilly and too congested- But a guy had something for sale that I could not resist. Anyway, after I had done my business, I hopped back on and the bike seemed dead(97, so the kill switch prevents even cranking) Well, I was on one of those big hills, so I let her roll down and tried the old clutch thingy with no results. What to do?? Had no cell phone-forgot it at home. Sat there for a few moments, sort of scanning things. Must have looked at that switch several times( I don't like the way it is set up with thehandle offset from the little mark, fools me every time. Anyway, it finally registered on my brain that the bloody thing had gotten knocked off. Set it to correct position and---------vrooooooooom.

I have often considered taping that damn Kill Switch so it can't be moved.

I have never had a reason to want to use it anyway. If you go down, the auto-kill banking switch will take care of that for you.

me too... and what isit for anyway????? I never use it on the 1500.. (on the 1100, it can be used to allow cranking with no spark.. that can be useful... )

Stupid huh, you think that's stupid. At least you will probably learn from this one. I've done it a few times and thought to look at that, the most obvious last.

Welcome top the club.

Well, at least i know i am not the only one!!! I always kill mine by putting the side stand down , with the clutch pulled, in gear. Then cut the key off. But my Dad took it for a spin the other day, came back and parked her. We were leaving to go on a ride so he hopped on his and took off. I tried and nothing. He finally came back i thought he had played a joke on me but nope just the good ol switch so i guess the joke was on me afterall
