big knocking noise first start GL1100

hello,
we tried to start our gl1100 yesterday after changing the motor. there has been a big knocking noise so we stopped immediately,

we tried starting without lighting the coils, and the motor makes a nice sound with no more knocking noise.

- we changed the GL1100 motor for a 1983 GL1100 aspencade
- we changed the drive belts and it seemed to turn nicely

- the coils are plug this way: 1 and 3 on the right top and bottom; and 2 and 4 on left top and bottom

do you have any idea of what it can be ?

thank you for your help

You're using a Clymer manual perchance?
I'm not sure which coil is which but one runs the front cylinders and the other the rear.
thanks ken,
yes that's true, the 1 and 2 come from one point, and 3 and 4 from the other.

we're trying to redo the belts but it's complicated cause the marks on the pulleys are different from the old motor...
