Hi Pete. Yes thats the short piece. Its a bear to remove as it scrapes off the frame and everything else. I got mine out by bending it and when it was repainted I had to wrap it in thick insulating tape and gently bend it back into place and finally remove the tape.
If I was doing this again, I would just remove the lower frame bar that the side stand mounts to, that would definitely be faster than the way I did it last time.
I know a guy who gave up and just masked around that piece and sprayed it in place, but he has a spray kit in his garage. He didn't know that the lower frame bar was removable.
