I am working on the brakes and thank I may have to rebuild the rear MC. The book I have says to remove the R exhaust to get it off. My question is do I really have to do this or is there another way?

No, you don't have to remove the exhaust... The rear brake caliper simply unbolts with 2 bolts, then lifts of the caliper.


Edit: Sorry, I thought you were refering to the rear brake Caliper.
Edit: Yes, the rear Master Cylinder is a much more involved job, involving removal of the exhaust system.

Accessing the rear master cylinder is a booger -- it's worse on the '88-'89, IMHO. but yes, unless you want to try the rebuild without pulling the unit out, you're pretty much gonna need to pull down the exhaust (the chamber too depending on year).

It's easy enough to figure for yourself -- follow the pushrod and clevis off of your pedal, and the hose down from the reservoir, then see what you can touch/see with all the exhaust left in place. Not a good story, but it will let you decide that the books are correct (or not).

Thanks I was afraid of that. I am going to try to flush and bleed the brakes first but just had hoped someone had came up with something different on removing the MC. This bike also has every light and piece of chrome that has ever been made to put on one of these bikes makes it a pain to get to anything.

I am just about done doing exactly that to my 96SE and yes you have to remove the exhaust, muffler, heat shield, front tire, windshield, left shoe, right sock and door knob to the garage to get it out. Seriously it's a [email protected]!

I am not 100% positive but I think that I was able to do it without pulling the muffler? I have a 1988. The muffler is not that hard to pull off if you do need it out of the way. The collector that the muffler connects to does not need to come off. Getting the brake lines off is easier with the bolts removed that hold the master cylinder in place though. Put some good music on and have a beer before you start may help also!:ROFL:

Take the easy route, rebuild the calipers, flush out the system and see if you have a problem with the master cylinder. You may be able to get by unbolting the muffler suspension bolt, loosening the clamp and rotating the muff down and out of the way without actually pulling it off if it comes to that.
