Broken Driver's Side Footpeg, GL1800

I have a 2003 Goldwing Trike. I had been using the leftside footpeg for mounting the trike, I also stand up on these to adjust my sitting position while riding. Last week while mounting the trike, my leftside footpeg snapped off. (Metal Fatigue?, Operator too heavy 250lbs?). Anyway, I have ordered a new one, and had the old one tig welded temporarily.

These do not appear to be designed for the weight of a heavy rider.Anyway, I thought this might already have been a problem, but I did not see it in the earlier posts.I enjoy the forum very much and have just joined. Thank you Steve and Others for all of the wonderful information. John

:waving:Welcome and Hello . Thank you for the heads up for those it applies to. Glad you werent hauling down the highway and have it break while you were adjusting your seating , that could have been bad . Hopefully it was a one unit failure and not a common problem .

thanks for heads up, i have thought about that and occasionally check my pegs more often just took them for granted, i'll certainly put them on my check list. welcome from central tx.:action::waving:

I broke one off recently on one of those reflectors they put down the center of the highway and noticed the holes in it were worn oblong with only 30,000+ miles on it. They should have a steel bushing in them where the pin goes through. Not that it would have helped mine.

I really appreciate this Heads UP. So far, have only owned a GL1200 and GL1500. Not once did I wonder if the foot pegs might break off.

I have leg cramps from time to time, and I frequently stand up on the pegs at speed to exercise the muscles. A foot on the ground at 70 mph? Not good, broken ankle at a minimum, crash most likely.

I just added a new item to my PM list

Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering about the strength of the pegs because mounting the bike is much easier using the left peg but my wife doesn't like it. At 300 lbs I might just be a bit too heavy for that.

I've had my GL1800 for 10 days as I write this so hopefully no damage has been done yet.

Is the use of aluminum new on 1800s or should I worry about my 1500 pegs?

I have owned several 1500 Goldwings, but I never had any problem with the footpegs. These pegs on the 1800 are cast aluminum, very thin and cheap looking up close. Of course they were not designed for triking....but, all bikers place their whole body weight on pegs from time to time while stretching on long trips usually....I believe personally that the 1500 was a stronger unit overall....maybe not as cool electronically but physically stronger.......Nice to hear from all of you guys on this ........it is sort of frightening when you think about your foot flying off at high speed on the interstate.....ps. At least you got a free cb all wired up....

That's one of the things that always occurs to me when I rise up a bit to over a rough spot on the highway or stand up to get the kinks out. Luckily it's a pretty rare occurance for any model 'Wing.

I had a peg break off my 160 scrambler landing after a jump and ever since when I stand on the pegs I put my weight as close to the bike as I can to reduce the stress on the peg.
The 1800 pegs are a pretty substantial piece of aluminum except as I mentioned before where the pin goes through. It would be a good idea to check how much play it has on the pin once in a while. The peg, less the rubber is only $18.

Yeah, I always keep my feet as far inboard on the peg as possible when putting weight on it, hoping that the stub will hold my foot if the thing breaks.

I sure hoped you guys were putting us on and this was some kind of a sick joke.

Being a ex-dirt biker (enduro), I'm on the pegs all the time. Every bridge to get the kinks out and looksy at what the fishing might be and such. Every bump is programmed to transfer weight to the pegs before the bump just as I did years ago.

This issue is not an item of convenience it is a major safety issuewith us.

Many many thanks for the heads up. Not only are we going to inspect but improve. Oil or grease in this area is not good either as this will collect road grit and make a grinding compound and accelerate the wear.

Someone more knowledgeable than me must have the answer in a retrofit or aftermarketreplacement for the 1800.

Sure would like to see a close up picture of a peg worn in this area.

I had several more pics, But, I can't track them down. Probably on one of my backup drives.

I can't believe Mother hasn't addressed this issue. I even read of one rider getting killed because he dropped instantly, and lost control. Something to think about. I tested my 1500 pegs with a 4 lb hammer on the tips, and it passed my "crude" test. Gonna do the 1800 one of these days, too. When I think of it. :?

The ones on my 1800 seem just OK. Loosy Goosy, but maybe by design. Definitely looser than any on my dirt bikes.

You think my flip flops will handle the big drop when a peg goes? :cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1:

I should get a picture off to the group of what is occasionally worn here in the way of no shirt, shorts and flip flops. This is mostly on Sportsters.

Enough, almost time to go fishing.

I have another question on foot pegs, the corner of my footpegs have the rubber worn to the point where there is metal showing. Has anyone else heard of this issue?

The corner of my foot pegs are also wornlike that. I tend to ride with my foot hanging on the edge of the peg. I assumed this promoted the wear. I bought a used set of foot pegson Ebayand am saving them just in case I ever decide to replace my worn ones.
