I just installed a J&M headset into my helmet. I was anxious to try it since that's how my riding buds communicate. Previously, I could hear them but had no mic to respond. Today, tried to receive and send to my wife in the kitchen with a hand held CB. She could hear me but I could barely hear her. I can hear the static when adjusting squelch although the static isn't very loud. It could possibly be the radio my wife was using. CB works fine coming thru dash speakers. I've read that the switches need cleaning every year with contact cleaner. I can hear the AM/FM fine thru headset. I realize that this is like getting a haircut on the phone but don't know what to check. I've only owned this bike since Dec '12 so it could be user error! 2000SE. PS: I've heard that the red ones are the fastest! :?
Positioning the microphones directly over the ears is extremely important. You can adjust them inside the helmet. A 1/4" will make all the difference in the world.
This is a NEW unit? Still under warranty? I've seen them to be defective but that is pretty rare.
If there is little static or noise with the squelch open and the volume all the way up there is a good chance the 1st If stage coil is open, a very common problem with the 1500 CB radios. The winding in these OEM coils are very small and susceptible to failure.
After reading posts, went out again this morning and,,,, yes, IC knob was turned on 1/2 way. I turned it off. CB seems to operate properly thru dash speakers. Can receive and transmit. With headset, turning squelch counterclockwise, static is very faint and can't recieve but can transmit. Vol knob makes it slightly louder but not usable. The transmit lever on left handlebar seems sticky. Are the coils repairable? thx
Are you sure it is normal RX volume on external speakers?? If so then the 1st IF stage is OK. Give Jeff a call at store Monday AM and he will help you.
