Carb Sync GL1200

I posted something days ago with an issue of a rattling sound in the rear of my GL1200A engine. I did not get many replies, but I did take it to another shop and they mentioned the carb sync. Today I took it to the shop that only last week said it was a rod bearing, now they say it's a clutch basket. But the sound does not change when I press the clutch. Now I am noticing a knocking sound at 4000+ RPM. Could all this be caused by the carbs being out of sync? I have a friend that offered to sync my carbs. After reading posts on here it sounds like the rattling noises at idle can be the result of carbs. Any ideas?

Yes an imbalance in the carb slides will cause a rattling sound at idle and very low RPM. Having your carbs syncronized will help with the noise and smooth response from idle. Much above 1,500 rpm and you'll have to look elsewhere for engine noise remedies. :gunhead:

If you can sync the carbs that will eliminate that and it can make a big difference in the way it runs.
I don't have a 1200 I have an 1100 and when the carbs are in sync it idles a smoother and quieter.
Using a stethoscope or a long handle screwdriver with your ear on the handle can isolate a rattle or noise. :action:

Well that did not help at all. We sync'd the carbs and the noise was still there. When I brought the bike home two weeks ago it looked like I was getting 42 MPG, now maybe 32 MPG. I did put in a heavier weight oil, could that push up the fuel consumption? I am thinking more and more its the main drive chain off the crankshaft to the transmission. Help!

Check the rotor bolt in the rear of the stator housing. Poor fuel economy is going to be carb and/or ignition problems or possibly dragging brakes.
