The slides on my carburetors had a carbon buildup on the top of the slides and in thecover that it operates in at the top of the carb. Is this normal? Would this be caused by a timing belt that is not set right?

A little black soot would be OK but if an actual buildup that would be unusual. Improper cam timing could contribute to it.
Restricted exhaust could also be the cause.
