Changing Grips

They are glued on, depending on the grips and type of glue sometimes you can either twist them, work a thin screwdriver up between the grip and the bar or blow air into them to break them loose or just cut them.

On my stock grips, I stuck a long thin bladed screwdriver through the small hole on the end of the grips and worked it around the circumference of the bar. Gave it a shot or two of WD40 and worked the screwdriver around somemore to loosen it up. It then twisted right off

Most important, remember to clean the grip area of all old glue and oil before installing the new grips. The new glue won't stick properly to the bars, and they will be harder to get the new grips one if you don't clean them.

Wasn't sure where to place this question, but I am replacing originalgrips with kuryakyn iso grips on a 1995 GL1500. Have already removed old grips. New ones seem to go on too easily; lots of slack. Doesn't seem like glue would fill enough of the gap between grip and handle bar. They shouldn't go that easily, should they? Plus, new grips didn't have glue in package, even though instructions said it did.

ISO Grips come in different sizes to fit differnt diameterhandlebars on differnt brands of bikes.

Did you purchase yours from a Goldwing parts retailer/dealer?

Do both seem too large for the bars?(throttle sleeve side will be too large on the clutch side) When I fitted mine, they were both tight.

If both are too large, send them back and get the proper ones for a Goldwing. (3/4" dia. bars).

As far as where to post, next time create a new topic, at top right of the forum section, rather than tagging on an old post(this was from 2009). We'll give you grace as you are new here.
A lot of companies are not putting in glue anymore to get you to pay for glue now. Ask before you pay for them. They might throw it in to get a sale.
Did you buy them local or online?
As Dusty said they should fit tight. Be sure to get them listed for a 1500 wing. Those may be for an 1800 which have 1" bars.

Thanks guys! My wife had ordered these for me through the local honda dealer. They are indeed 1". I'll exchange them for the correct 3/4". BTW, I had tried to initiate a new topic in the forum, but was instructed tha I didn't have the rights to start one. I'll figure it out soon! Thanks again!

Steve might have a restriction that you need to have 10 or more posts (?) before you can start a new topic.

BTW, either soapy water, or hairspray, will let them slip on pretty easy and then 'stick' once dry.

So just soapy water, no glue right?
Or just hairspray.

In the past I have used brake cleaner or contact cleaner.

That's right, Stu, either one and no glue needed.

I had to replace one of my foamGrip Puppies on the left handlebar after this summer's tour. I really like them (better than the ISO Grips for ME) and the 1st pair I used Hair spray on the inside of them andon the OEM grips, to install them over the OEM grips.It was quite a job slipping then on/over the stock grips and I had to work fast before it dried. This time I read the instructions and they suggested just some dish detergent on the inside of the foam grip. I smeared some on, moistened it with a dab of water on my fingersand it went on over the stock grip slick as you please. Very easy. Let it dry for an hour or so and it sticks on there like glue. Course, the hair spray sticks well too, as it gets very tacky when dry.

I used brake cleaner when I reinstalled my OEM grips after installing the grip heaters, but the dish soap works better IMHO!

Are these grips for the 1800? If so, by your picture it looks like you have the comfort package? (Solid chrome panels at the outside ends of each headlight). If you do have the comfort package, the iso grips clam-shell over your existing heated grips..don't cut them off.

You can always purchase the Kuryakin 'clamshell' iso grips. They fit over existing grips if you like a larger diameter grip.

7/8" diameter, right, not 3/4" Not to quibble about 1/8th", but I always see the older (pre cruiser) Japanese bikes as having 7/8th" dia handlebars - no? I just fit 7/8th" grips on my bike - worked well.

Those foam grips are aftermarket. Look up the manufacturer and they should have some instructions.

Mine have those when I first got it but grips were in terrible shape. I give them little twist and they came right off.
