Choke will not release back to idle, GL1200

Hello,

I have a 86' GL1200,

My Choke works great, it is easy to push the choke level to the on Position.

But the choke lever feels like the lever has no tension when trying to push the choke lever to off.

I cannot turn the Choke off at the handle bar lever.

I have to manually push the four enrichment levers on the carbs to turn the choke off.

any Ideas?

Thanks

It sounds like maybe the cable needs a little lube i think thr is a spring mech under the plenum that aids in returning the choke to off if it does not return then the cable may cloged with gunk

Or it could be where the cable hooks to the carb where the return spring is, that area might need lubing too. Lube all your cables at the same time, they need lube every year, 2 at most.

Edit: check the choke operation at the carbs after lubing.

Thanks to all that replied,

I lubed all the cables, including choke and throttle,

They all work much better. Choke releases now as it should, throttle snaps back much improved.

Thanks

If both your throttle and choke weren't working as they should it could be a problem in cable routing. A sharp bend where there shouldn't be one will cause the cables to bind in their housings and increase the effort needed to operate. The chokes on these bikes are spring loaded to open because the cable can't push them open. If they don't want to open a worn cable, misrouting, kink, or problems with the carb linkage are normal causes.

The handling of an older bike usually can be greatly improved by replacing the throttle cables. You may think your bike shifts well butnew and freely running throttle cables can make more difference than you'd expect. Once it gets necessary to lube the cables frequently they are definitely in need of replacement. Do yourself a favor and replace them, you'll be surprised how much better shifts you can make. If the clutch cable has been there for years change it too, it will make the effort at the clutch lever much less and I can say from experienceriding with a broken clutch cable isn't much fun.
