On my '82 Aspencade, radio does work, poor reception.... cant tell what it's doing though. Display is not on. Does anyone know if this is a common issue and can it be fixed easily? Or is it not worth caring. . .

:waving:Yes, Sierra Electronics can fix it as they have parts to repair Honda/Clarion Type II components and they are very reasonable in what they charge. Early 2008 I had no transmit on my CB so called Sierra and was told it was probably a capacitor. I shipped it to them and the charge was a total of $96 which included shipping it back to me.

I called them today. They said they have enough parts to build me a brand new one from scratch if not repairable. They said the standard charge is $100 and that if it were to exceed that, they would call for approval. Sounds like a plan to me. I don't really want to listen to the radio that often, I would just like it to work.

If the radio works, but no display, there is most likely a bad connection. In my case,mice ate the display indicator wiring.

Which radio do you have? There's a big difference between the Clarion 1 and Clarion 2 systems. Everyone is assuming you have the Clarion 2 system but with an 82 that's not always the case. My bike has had both systems on it and it's the Clarion 2 system that's still on my bike.

If the display is built into the radio controller panel then it's a Clarion 1 system. If the display is on a gauge pod in the middle of the fairing then it's a Clarion 2 system.

Display is up in the fairing. Clarion II

Well, since it's verified as a Clarion 2 system then you need to check all the connections inside the fairing and all the fuses. The display has a large connection that goes all the way around to the controller panel in the lower left fairing that needs to be checked. Best if you had the install manual for the system.

Mine was doing the same thing and my voltmeter was also not working. Before you spend money I second the connector and wire check.

Here is what Mice do for fun..

:waving:How did the mice get into your fairing? I've read other post about mice in the fairing but always wondered where they are getting in.

:waving:All GL1100 Aspencades came standard from the factory with the Honda/Clarion Type II AM/FM radio only. The rest of the Type II system was optional on the Aspencade. Both the Type I and Type II sytems were optional on the GL1100Interstate as the Interstate did not come standard from the factory with a sound system. They were dealer or owner installed. Some Interstates had the Type I removed and a Type II system installed as it was a far superior sound system. In my case I purchased the complete Type II system brand new and did the installation myself on my '83 Interstate middle of 1983.

I know all that and understand it. What I'm trying to point out is the fact that over the years and with different owners most of these bikes have had, things will and do get changed out at times. I try to ask direct, explicit questions before posting information and try never to assume anything. Yes, folks do assume that an 82 Aspy comes with a Clarion 2 system and normally they do, but like I say, parts get swapped out all the time on older bikes.

Case in point: My brother is restoring an 83 Aspy that had all the clarion 2 system ripped out and replaced with a Cyclesound setup with a car type cb and home made intercom system installed on it. We ripped all that oout and I gave him my good working Clarion 1 system to install on it since I had upgraded my 82 Interstate to a Clarion 2 system complete with the full intercom\cb setup.

It's all good though.:waving::waving::waving::action::action::action::action::action:

I really don't know either. When I first bought this bike they had built a nest all across the bottom of the fairing. Even though I took the entire fairing apart and washed it all out it still smells like Mice. They really chewed up lots of wire that time and it is a pretty impressive sight when you take everything that fits in that fairing and lay it all out.. It is a LOT of stuff. This latest time wasn't as bad but still is pretty annoying. I have no idea how they get in there unless it is somehow through the hole where the main harness connects to the fairing.

Put lots of rat/mouse bait around where you park your bike:action:possibly evens sleep with it for a night or tow with a loaded shot gun:cheeky1::D

I have had good luck with "Bounce" fabric softner sheets. Apparently mice hate the smell and taste of them. I am sure it would work with any softner sheet. A friend tried them in his cottage over the winter, and never had a problem again.
