I have a 1979 GL1000. Does the cooling fan only come on when needed or is it supposed to be on always?

It only runs when the temp reaches something like 200 F. The switch is on the top front of the engine looking in from the right side.

The cooling fan comes on when the temperature reaches a certain temperature.

If yours is not running, it may be the fuse under the seat that is the problem.

The temperature gauge will usually be about 3/4 scale towards hot or a bit more before the fan comes on. If you start the bike and let it idle for a while in reasonably warm weather it should get hot enough to bring the fan on in 15 minutes or so. Once the fan comes on there should be a fairly quick drop in the temp gauge reading.
