I picked up my Honey from work couple of days ago, but I was riding my KLR650 instead of my ST. Nice fall day, so we took the long way and ran it out about 20 miles or so..... but, close to home, I smelled something burning and thought I heard a strange howl........ hard to tell on my Jardine-equipped Kwakker!

Took a look when we got in and........ lo and behold....... the monoshock had went soft and the exhaust header pipe came all the way down and hit the rear tire, which melted nicely......! I can stand behind the bike now and very easily bounce the rear up and down like a pogo stick! Bummer!

But the real bummer?

OEM Kawwie Monoshock = $700

Popular aftermarket Moab Monoshock = $550

Goode Gawd! Are them things made of gold? So, I can either send it in to Multisurface Motorcycling's TopGun department and get it resprung with a heavier spring for $79.50, or have them rebuild, respring, and revalve the thing for $425.....sizzle........

Whaddya think? Any monoshock experts on here? Oh, yeah....Red hasn't talked to me since I told her that her excessive weight must have desprung the shock..... can't figure out why she's mad..... heck, it's my shock.......

CJ:
me thinks you might need a doghouse too....or are you sleeping in the cab of that
old dodge pickup? For that price of a rebuilt shock I think I would just go get a new
one or try to find a used replacement on a certain auction site.

I'm sure there must be a KLR forum, there is one for everything else but none as good as this one. Might be some ideas there. I had a KDX250 years ago and the rear shock went bad and a new one was ridiculous so I sent it somewhere and had it repaired way less than new. It never did seem as good as it should have been but it worked.

The folks who make the Moab shock know what they are doing. They are very much favored on the Bandit board I still belong to and they will do you right.

Yeah, I'm leaning that way..... I could get it rebuilt for $425, or a new Moab for $100 more, and that Moab is a work of art...... they custom build them for your weight, road, and purpose.

The KLR is becoming amore important bike to me than I had intended it to be..... silly damn thing is always there, always ready to ride anywhere, and more fun than a van full of drunken cheerleaders....... but delicate she is, at least in the suspension.....takes a bit of work to keep her ticking........

CJ, she's just angry because she probably thinks you expect her to replace the shock. Let her know that you'll take care of it and everything will be alright, I promise. ;) :D

By the way...umm...you do...uhhhhh...keep your ammo locked up safely and separately don't you? :cheeky1::cheeky1:

Nothing wrong with the spring. Is there oil around the shaft? Usually the oil seal goes. Your description of "pogo stick" tells me the oil seal went or the valving inside is shotand you've lost the dampening effect. If you push down, and itsprings up......the rebound dampening is shot......if it pushes down easy, but comes up slow the compression dampening is shot. It's probably lost the nitrogen charge as well.

No way would I go with that expensive aftermarket shock.........getting your OEM shock rebuilt and valved for your weight is the way to go IMHO.

Pull it off and send it off to any of the offroad suspension shops. Probably cost you about 75.00 to 175.00 dependingto have it rebuilt. These guys will replace the seals and damaged/worn valving. For another hundred or so you can have it valved for your weight and riding style. You can also take it to your local Kawi shop....but I prefer the offroad custom shops because they do a better job for less money. We used RG3 or Precision Concepts when we were racing, they both do a good job. Google 'em up and shoot them and email for a basic quote.

Can't see dropping $500+ on an aftermarket shock/spring unless you're planning to do some serious off-roading for extended periods. I really like the OEM Kawi shock. Personally, I would have it rebuilt for $100 or check ADV or Thumper Talk for a an OEM takeoff cheap.

I keep mine at #3 preload with a #3 damping. It seems a like a good setting combo for lite off-road and street with some gear loaded.

Well, she broke it, she should replace it right?

:cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1:

Seems fair to me......

And yes, I do have the ammo locked up, but she has a key to the safe! Not only that, I bought her her own pistol and taught her how to shoot....... wait a minute..... that might not have been the smartest move on my part, huh?

CJ, I'm in the same boat. Bought the wife an ar-15 couple weeks ago which added to her 380 that she carries for her chl. If I tick her off I'm a dead man, she is an excelent shot. My only hope would be that she was mad enough to miss me and run out of ammo long enough for me to escape.........:cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1:

Which I doubt will happen..............

Also, worth calling them and seeing if you can get a package deal. Send your forks in with the shock, get them all done and valved for your weight/riding style. The nice thing is....they both service what they build so for the rest of the life of your bike......you just send your stuff to them for a refresh every few seasons and you'll always havegreat, consistentsuspension.

I think Race Tech has a similar service too.

Ok Cousin Jack here come some straight poop. Or at least as much as I can give you. I also own a KLR and I know how important they can become too you. Bish does have a point about the rebuilding of the Shock.
If you can get it done I would let the guys at "TopGun " do it. I have talked to Todd from TG about my own machine, and having it set to the right weight for you is the way to go

.I have ridden with other KLR owners here in British Columbia that have done this change to their machines, and they all said that they wished they did it sooner. They also put progressive springs in the front forks as well.
If you are looking for a KLR forum the best one out there if you are not aware of it is called "KLR World". Post this question there and you will get so much info it will surprise you. Next to this sight that we are on here, this by far is the best motorcycle sight out there.

As far as who pays for the rear shock, I do not have an answer for that one. You could ask her to pay for it, and then come up to Canada, to get a "get out of the Dog House for free " card.
Thanks

LLF
