Danger of wind screen

A lot of Florida guys wear only t-shirt, slippers and shorts. It is possible that wind screen is the reason. When I ride bike w/o wind screen I can wear leather jacket and feel OK. I found peace of clear plastic in my shed today so I am going to make 2-5" high wind screen for my Wing.

I believe the european wings came stock with a low windshield.

Only the German models come with a cut down and really useless screen and an even more useless trunk which measures about 4" in depth. It's all due to some rule governing maximum height allowed for bikes.
The Germans have many restrictive and petty laws for motorcycles and riders. I know I will be giving the 2 fingered salute to the Lisbon treaty this October.

Not all clear plastic is created equal. Check the type you have to make sure it is suitable if you haven't already.

I hear ya new biker. I bought my 1500 in June and have been barbecuing down here in Texas ever since. Yet... I cannot seem to justify riding in shorts and flip-flops (which I think is stupid.) I cut my windshield down 5" and may go back and cut off more. I added air wings which are available from Showchrome. I also fashioned some homemade lower air scoops from 3" PVC 90 degree elbows. they're bolted onto the engine guards and scoop outside air down onto my feet. They seem to help. Also I can highly recommend the Tourmaster Intake jacket and gloves... very light... very cool.

Check out the pic below on my GL1100. Nice Scoop. I do not know if that is the one they are talking about though. You can also cut out the 3 inch holes in your windshield like mine. They make covers for them also. Great in the summer. As for what you wear, I would not want to ride without enough protective cover on. The Standard Goldwing Jacket is very breathable, even in 90 degree weather. I usually take my lowers off in the Summer. Add some additional highway pegs that mount on your engine guards. to your wing. It's just enough from overheating your legs too.

I rummaged around in my online galleries and found these... I think I uploaded them once and sent them to Rudy so they were already online.

This is a 3", schedule 40, 90 degree elbow, cut with a saber saw using what I call the TLAR method. (That Looks About Right! TLAR!) I cleaned up and sanded the edges and painted it with Krylon Hamertone spray paint. I had these two chrome u-bolts left over from an engine guard toe rest kit I never installed. Wrapped the engine guard with a piece of radiator hose, bolted 'em on and taa-daa... lower air scoops to keep my feet from broiling. They help too! I have an idea of how to refine the design a bit and move up to a 6" thin wall elbow.

I had the bike at the dealer the other day and the shop manager came out and took pictures with his phone. He told me they were "too cool!"

BTW New Biker... you were saying you were going to make a 4" windshield out of a piece of acrylic scrap. I have that 5 inch piece of plexy I cut off the top of my 1500 windsheild. It's rated for that use and already has a very nice curve. It came off the top of a brand new slip steamer windshield. I'll give you that for free if you can pay to ship it. Lemme know... more here...

I put 4 aircraft vents in the windscreen of my wing. You can even remove them to let more air in. That and the wings on the fairing help alot. And as mentioned, highway pegs let you get your legs up and into the breeze.

...that used to be, they finally gave up, when everybody was importing US-Wings...

Does that help with turbulence? Can you shut them in the winter? Where did you get them?

They do seem to cut down on the low pressure area behind the windshield. As far as having more air move by, not really that much difference. It's weird but if you've noticed, rain drops don't move up the screen as much as you would think. I think that the aerodynamics of the fairing isn't really all that great.

Yes, you just push them closed.Aircraftspruce is where I got them. I'll come back with the addy in a moment. Well, that was complicated

Uh........the bigger ones....to be honest with you, it's been about 4 years since I put mine in. I do know for sure, that they were the bigger size. The funny part about why there are 4 vents in my windshield is that Aircraft Spruce accidentally sent me an extra order of two vents. I contacted A S to find out why I got a "bonus" set of vents. They responded that "yes, the order wasn't correct, but it was their mistake not mine and to keep the vents."

So, bug eyes was born.:dude:All you need to install them is a very sharp hole-saw, good measuring skills, and patience.

Temps been around the upper 90 to lower 100s of late but I haven't felt like I was melting as long as I wear my mesh jacket and keep the Baker Airwings turned in. I managed to stay cool enough that I didn't sweat much at all. The story is a lot different on my Silverwing scooter. I ran some errands the other day wearing a short sleeve shirt and shorts and wearing Teva sandals (Yeah, yeah, I know...) and sweat through my shorts and shirt on a much shorter ride. Odd since none of the engine heat on the scooter gets to the rider and the fairing and windshield is much smaller.

Nightrider1, that is a great looking bike. You have the exact case guards that I am looking for. If you ever decide you'd like to have the full wrap type let me know & we could swap. But that is not why I posted here. That is truelly a beautiful bike. I saw one that could have been it's twin here in Vancouver last week. Didn't have the vents tho. Ride safe. Damniit HOBIE1. Thanks alot. it looks like I have yet another projecct for the first weekend of september. Which seems silly since the cool months are commming.
