Different coolant/ Miracle cure??

About a month ago I flushed and filled my radiator with the Prestone "Extended Life" coolant that supposedly is made for any vehicle known to mankind.

Well about 2 days later I noticed an oil leak coming out the bottom weep hole. Crap!!!

Well I did some searching on this fine site and lo and behold I find certain coolants cause leaks and/or water pump failures.

I thought I was going to have to yank the water pump and put a new oil seal......

So just for the heck of it, I decided to take one of you guys' advice and purchase a bottle of the Texaco/ Havoline at my local Wally Mart and do another flush and fill. You know what? It's been over a week and no leak!! (knock on head)

But how would this happen?:baffled:

I don't think they are connected. The Prestone Extended Life is silicate and phosphate free, I used the stuff in my 1200. Clean off the bottom of your engine to make sure any future oil is coming from the weep hole and not somewhere else. I'd also recommend keeping an eye on your coolant for any signs of oil and your oil for any signs of coolant. If the main seal in your pump goes, you lose the separation of these too fluids.

Doug, even if you use a silicate based coolant, it would take longer than 2 days for it to affect the pump. It happened me with a GL1000 years ago but it took about 4 or 5 months before the pump started leaking coolant.

Do I just make sure its silicate free antifreeze? When I did my alternator change,I bought Prestolite (Orange) and it said it was silicate free.Hopefully thats the only necessety when choosing an antifreeze.

Any silicate AF is do-able.. However, look for other additives that hint at an abrasive base. Most are o.k. to use for M/C applications. I prefer the Texaco brand because GM puts it in their new cars on the assembly line.. :clapper:

Prestolite Orange should be just fine, it is non silicate.

Typo, Renegade you did mean any NON-silicate AF is do-able... No?

The leak is back.

Does this mean it's time for a seal kit for the W.P.?:doh:

The weep hole on my 83 Aspencade was leaking oil when I bought it. I lived with it for a couple of months, checking the oil level daily. It was slowly losing more oil every day. I checked around on the Internet for a new water pump then went to the local Honda dealer. They (surprisingly) were not any more expensive than getting one off the net by the time you add shipping. Even more surprisingly the parts manager remembered a seal kit Honda put out forbikes that were leaking oil (not water) from the weep hole. He looked it up and ordered it for me. It was only about $17.00 I think. It took a few hours to putin but hasn't leaked a drop of oil or water since! I think I spent more time cleaning the old gasket material off the mating surfaces than disassembly and reassembly combined.

Oil at the weep hole just means the inner seal is leaking, not the main seal on the pump shaft. It that leaks you will find oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. As Bob said the seal isn't expensive, and it isn't difficult to install.

with 28,000 miles on the clock, would you guys suggest just the seal kit, or doing the whole pump.

I've never had any issues with it running hot on me.
Even though the bike is 28 years old....:clapper:

I'd just get the seal kit, there's no indication the pump is failing.

I would just do the seals!

My wing had about 80,000 miles when I replaced the seals. Have almost 99,000 on it now and the pump seems fine.
