I just found out about this recently when I found a bell attached the to my "new" Goldwing. I hadn't heard of it before, which is nuts considering that I was raised around motorcycles. Maybe it's a new thing? Either way, it might be new to bikes, but it does actually have a history.
There are/were actual folk beliefs that related to bells scaring away mischievous "gremlins." Certain Norse tales tell of wights, or land-spirits(alfs, gnomes, dwarfs, pixies, etc), often benevolent but frequently troublesome, used to hate the sound of bells tolling from churches all the time, and many decided to relocate to avoid them.
