Do we even stand a chance?

On my way home this morning from my school bus route, I was passed in a school zone by a speeding young thing (blonde too) who was texting on her whatever those things are now. Later down the road I caught her at a signal light. A couple of blocks further is another school zone. Same story. I followed her several miles out the highway out of town and caught her at another signal light at a cross road, pulled up beside her and honked at her. She cracked the window slightly, and I scolded her in a fatherly way and told her what she'd done. She just gave me that "Duh, whatever" look. Today I was in my truck rather than on the bike, and I sure felt safer. It makes me wonder if our days are numbered for riding a bike with all the stupid people and their gadgets on the roads.

Some people just don't give a Dam about anyone. Courtesy and respect on the road is a thing of the past. You must always drive definsively out there. I know what I am doing but I sure don't know what will be next coming down the road.

Oh Ya, You should see them " Cry " when they get caught. Always trying to put the blame for their stupidity on someone else.Guess that is the way of the 21st Century.

I think this goes to the heart of the problem. No one is taught personal responsibility anymore. My children's teachers were always amazed that we came into their meetings and weren't trying to blame the teachers or the school for any problems our kids had. We have an entire society that seems to have the victim mentality, that nothing is their fault and they aren't responsible for their own problems. I'm afraid it will get far, far worse before it gets better, if it ever does.

Just saw in the local paper that our (Wisconsin) Legislature (Senate) passed a anti-texting law...2 more hurdles to go...(Representatives & Governor.) A lot of wonderment as to how the POs will be able to enforce it. Up to $400.00 fine for conviction, as written now. Apparently 19 other states already have the law...some claim our "disorderly driving" law already covers texting?? Its all way over MY head...:baffled: :waving:

California.... Big deal.... it's a $20 fine, first time, buttt said to cost up to $100 later!

A comedian once said..... the reason there are so many stupid people today.... is because there is nothing out there anymore to EAT them!

Enforcement is easy, the LEO asks the phone company for the user's billing records.
Phone companies are now advertising "no texting while driving"

I hope they find or have a way to enforce it and do so frequently. People need to stop the stupid habits when driving.

Over here in sw Wisconsin it's not uncommon to see folks pulled on the shoulder. I always stop to see if they need assistance and most are either calling or texting someone anymore. To me that's a good sign, but then again this is a farmer mentality area so most folks aren't tech savvy and need to stop to figure out that there dang fangled thing works:)

A friend of mine got one and it works pretty well up close.
Would be good for classrooms during tests.
Too bad it is illegal to use.

It is not just texting or talking on the phone. Just today I followed a guy and his wife in a car down the road. He was in the center lane going from 20 mph below the speed limit to 15 over, constantly.
When I finally got the chance to fall over in the fast lane and pass, I saw he had something he was reading on the steering wheel. It might have been directions, but who cares?
This week they've been advertising on the television that the LEO's are running a week of looking for agressive drivers, red light runners and speeders.
I will always hold to my claim that speed might make the accident worse, but it doesn't cause the accident.
Get the stupid people off the road that can't drive and then the roads will be a lot safer for all of us.

I can't agree with you more. Especially in your neck of the woods. I drive Hwy 27 down there in peak season. No one stops at red lights. You don't pull out without looking both ways at least 2 times down there. We have the same problems here but on less of a scale, as we are not infested with the Tourists such as you are.

Stay safe my friend. i want another ride with you this winter.

My son and I ride all year but if there is ice on the road we do not but we and all our bike friends have now started something new, when someone cuts us off or through out that lit smoke out the window we just get next to them and ask did you use your drivers mirror before you did that and if the reply is no I did not use it we just reply that if that is the case well I guess then you don't need it and we just knock that mirror right off with a good right gloved hand. The Police have come to the house and have asked why I did it and I or we say I DID WHAT YOU MUST BE WRONG that driver must of got my plate number just to pick on me because I my have Pissed them off, No I did not do damage to a vehical and you have a good day, with that they leave.

I think it is just a degradation of genetics! Stupid is just stupid. In my day, before all this electronic revolution, when a C.B. was the only portable comunication, the people still were not paying attention. Slapping thier kids while going 75 MPH, stuffing a triple decker cheesburger in thier mouth while braving traffic, and this last one is what almost killed my wife, guzzling a Big Gulp and rear ending Barb as she was stopped at a light. I get in a cage to DRIVE. If the phone in my pocket rings, it'll wait till I get somewhere. If I want a bucket of wings, I take em home, or eat em there. My rant is over, but now I'm hungry!! jimsjinx

I wish a law would be passed that if a LEO stops anyone using a cell phone w/o a hands free device, texting, or using any device that would distract them that he could, and would confiscate such device on the spot. To get it back the driver could pick it up when he pays his hefty fine. It's hypocritical to me that we have seat belt and helmetlaws which do not help make the road safer for other drivers, but allow cell phone and other device use, which makes the driver just as dangerous as if he'd been drinking.
