I'd vote for defect, because of the lines that seem to extend laterally around both edges of the tire from the "cut" area.

Am curious about the K177 tires. I see a lot of folks on these pages talking about all brands and models of tires. I rarely, if ever, see the 177 mentioned. It is apparently the OEM tire that is shipped with the bike, and the model that my '97 came with when I bought it. The PO had replaced the tires somewhat recently, and so far have had really good luck with them. No imbalance issues, cupping, wobbling, etc. Just a smooth ride, with what I would consider pretty good traction. Is there something I have missed about these tires ? Probably have about 3500 miles on them.
