Dying of heat!

I had my 82 GL1100 out today for a few hours, and while my wife on the back was quite comfy in the 90 degree weather, I was sweltering from the heat pouring out of the engine - especially going up hills. I was literally dripping and trying to hold body parts (one at a time) out in the airstream.

It would seem the Goldwing fairing is a little TOO efficient in hot weather. I'm sure there must be aftermarket wings and such that clamp on somewhere to direct air in behind the fairing for hot-weather riding. Can anyone point me to such a thing before I go out with some aluminum and design something myself?

I believe wing things charged me $10 shipping for 3 items....I suppose JCW just wants a little more profit....I also remember in the past they were expensive on shipping.

Don't know why JCW seems to be so high on their shipping compared to everyone else.

Just did a quick check.

Grand total from wing things #DS710350 - $44.95 w/shipping

Grand total from JCW #ZX063467B - $48.98 w/shipping
That's a simple question to answer. It's called GREED and DECEPTION. They want to make just as much or more than the other retailers.Only difference between them and others is that instead of being honest with their overall prices, they took the low road and are in the business of deceiving people into thinking they're getting a better deal.

I see a lot of the same thing on ebay, the shipping and handling is their built in profit.

Yes!!! I buy quite a bit from eBay and it makes me so mad when someone charges me $10.00 to ship something through USPS and then when it comes the postage on the box was less than $2.00. An automatic $8.00 profit.

Yep, that's why I insist on a shipping quote before bidding. I asked a guy for shippingon a slipstreamer windshield that cost $20. He told me $124!!!! I've sent bicycles across the country for less than $30!

They wanted $150.00 to ship me two tires to Canada

I feel very soured when I see that kind of gouging, but, also consider that it takes time and packaging to bundle up an item and send it off. Also, some folks may live some distance from the post office or shipper and may need to make a trip which might require parking fees and a fuel expenditure.

Just something to consider.

The overly inflated shipping costs are the main reason that I don't shop with JCW unless I have to. I only live about 100 miles from their shop and I'm amazed at how much they charge for regular brown ground UPS.

That being said, the products that I have bought from them have proven to be good in quality.

Here's an article about the vests, and if you click on the link that's buried in the articlethey seem to have the best price around.

There's something going on when shipping across the US/Canada border these days. I sold some bike parts and shipped them to Vancouver and Victoria which are both less than 150 miles from me and the shipping cost more than twice as much as a part of larger size that I shipped to Chicago, well over a 1000 miles. As for packaging and handling costs, that's a laugh, all of these companies use that to make a little extra profit, every one of them are expecting to ship stuff, a lot of it is already boxed anyway. JCW does go a little too far in that direction for my taste but most of them do it. If they ever start charging sales tax on internet or catalog sales it's really going to slow that kind of business down, right now the sales tax and shipping to Washington is about a wash.

Paul, it's really strange when shipping to Canada sometimes. I send and receive a lot of parcels and sometimes I do not get charged extraat customs and the post office for items and other times I get hit with really heavy charges.

For instance, I recieved a package form North Dakota and it cost me $60. to receive itfrom UPS when they came to my door, it weighed hardly anything. The very next day I received a heavy package via UPSfrom Oregon and again no charges. A week later I recieved a very large packagevia the Post Office and it didn't cost me a single penny. Then a few days later I received another package that was very small and light and it cost me $28.I can't figure it out. They were all sent as gifts and the sender in each case paid for shipping.

Also, I just sent a 4.5 pound package to Belgium and it only cost me $11.50 to ship it. A week before I received a package from Belgium and it cost me $14. to pick it up at the post office.

I understand that the charges I have had to pay are mostly brokerage fees, but, why can't they be consistent in their pricing structure?

Is it the same way in the U.S.?

Vic, That is hard on a guys bank account, have you ask UPS about the odd charges?

Yes, and the UPS delivery guy told me that he would never ship anything of his own by UPS and when he has something shipped to himself he has it sent to a relative's in Detroit then he goes across and brings it back into Canada himself to avoid any brokerage fees and surcharges.

Having lived in Canada until recently, I can tell you this - NEVER use UPS to ship anything across the border. UPS has a flat brokerage fee plus added fees based on value and weight, end result that you can expect to pay a minimum extra $30 customs/brokerage fees on anything shipped from the US. Fedex is much cheaper, around $15, and good old post office cheaper still - and whether or not the post office charges duty is pretty much a crap shoot. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, and there seems to be no rhyme nor reason behind it.

The end result was, when I lived in Canada, if I wanted to buy something from a US vendor, and they only shipped UPS, I would go find another vendor.

My understanding of it is, with the Free Trade Agreement, If it is an American made product there is no Duty. You will be charged PST and GST taxes on the converted Canadian price of the product when you pick it up at the Post Office, along with a minimal Postal Service fee.

Kyle, now that I can live with, but, still sometimes there is a charge at the post office and other times there isn't and the post office cannot explain why. I guess the government likes to keep their secrets.

Hello, I think my GL1200I is only "warm" compared to my 1984 Yamaha Venture Royale that dumped all the radiator and engine heat out on my legs. Honda did a good job of diverting radiator heat, and having the low engine really helps.

But our "warm" temps of only 96+ in July don't help the comfort level. I bought DS Deflectors from Texas Wing Things for $40 and that helps from waist to knees. I bought a vented Slip Streamer Wind Shield from them for $100, and that kills the dead air space. I am now working to make my driver cruiser boards useable to me; the deflectors only allow one position for the engine guard mounted boards. I am getting 2" booster pads because I don't fit Mother Hondas specs for rider size. I wanted a handlebar pull back or new bar to no avail.

The intense sunshine here raises the effective temperature to 115F or more. The highways also get that hot. So I have ordered an evaporative cooling vest. The Venture nearly killed me due to dehydration and heat exhaustion. I'd like to hang on and see my children grow up a bit.

Harley rider gear here tends to be light short sleeve shirt or tanktop, leather vest, jeans, and a bandanna. I knew a Harley riding nurse practioner a few years ago. She said the bandanna made sense to her friends: if they went down hard they wanted to bedead, and not made into veg's by having a helmet jam and crush the spine.

Someone, earlier in this thread, told me to try and remove the engine covers and that might help my heat problems. Well, one of my engine covers had a problem with a broken bracket and I left it off while I went to go get some epoxy to fix it. WOW!!!:realshocked: The heat was fairly extreme on the side without the cover. I am a firm beliver in the covers helping with the heat. It helps keep all the heat from getting to your legs. I think that all the heat problems will go away with the installation of a set of wind wings.

I do find the Baker wings to be well worthwhile even if they are butt ugly!
